Sometimes when you meet someone you know right then and there that you are going to be good friends. That's not at all how it was with Barrett.
When I was a baby I lived in the town of _____. My mother was a scientist, and my father an artist. When they worked together, anything was possible. Next door to us was my mothers longtime friend Bree. While I don't remember much of her, I know that she has about 5 or 6 kids. Among those kids was a nerdy boy named Barrett.
At first Barrett was not the fondest of me. He took my toys from me, and laughed at me when I could not find them. But all of this changed my 1st grade year. I came home crying because of people calling me horrible names. My mother told Bree, and Barrett ended up find out from her. To my surprise, that next day at school no one said anything rude to me. For the remainder of my time at that school, Barrett stopped picking on me and teaching me what he knows.
The summer after 2nd grade my grandmother passed away. Knowing that my grandmother would not be able to live on her own, we moved to Colorado. It didn't take long to sell the house and pack up. And when the time finally came to leave, I was a crying mess. I did not want to leave Barrett. I kept my small arms locked around his body, holding on to him in a tight hug as he held me. The whole time tears streamed down my face while Barrett just kept his eyes shut tight and held on to me. When we were pulled apart by our mother Barrett ran inside of his house. Thinking that was the last I would see of him, I let my father pick me up and hold me. But through my tear filled eyes I could make out Barrett running toward us, holding a locket in his small hands.
Asking my father to put me down, I meet Barrett half way.
"I was going to give this to you on your birthday, but I want you to have it now" While saying this, Barrett had me turn around as he put the necklace around my neck.
I squeezed him into the tightest hug, then with one last goodbye, I hopped into the car and was off to my new home. While look at Barrett through the window, I opened the locket and seen a photo of us together on one side, and the quote "apart in distance, but never in heart" in the other.
Tears streamed traveled down my face as I seen Barrett of the last time.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
