CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Colours bombarded Marian.

At first, she hadn't known what she was meant to do, standing on the platform with Carolina's gaze boring into her back. As she pulsed energy into the smaller crystal, the orange glow shooting from her fingertips, the crystal slung her orange aura across the room into the Ocular with great force. The orange glow turned into a link that anchored her fingertips to the crystal orb, and from the orb to the Ocular like a long thick rope. Though, while it launched into the Ocular, filling it up with her energy, the same force bounced back and blasted her mind with it.

Immediately, Marian had gone into a trance. Her whole body froze.

Then, the images came. Memories of everything she knew about Elle and more.

In the first vision, they were both younger. Marian was still her aunt's apprentice, wearing her long flowing red skirt and a multitude of crystal beads dangling against her black vest. Elle fluttered around her cheerily, she was in a short pink skirt of which ended just below her knee and a white frilly top. She was visiting the coven with the rest of her family. Just beyond them, there stood the current Chancellor Jonathan Goff. Back then, he was only a lowly untitled minister within the Elemental Council for Health and Safety. He stood next to Elle's parents and speaking with her aunt, the coven leader.

That was unexpected. She hadn't recalled that Chancellor Goff was in the picture.

In the second vision, they were older. Marian still had the beads of crystals around her neck but, at something like ten, she wore shorts and liked to stick feathers in her thick hair. Elle on the other hand, wore her blonde hair longer. Other than that, she hadn't changed much. The two girls sneaked quietly in the dark, hidden behind a half-opened door. In the background, her vision flashed to the sinister look Elle's parents gave her aunt behind her back while the Chancellor made a speech.

In the third, the vision flashed to something she had imprinted to memory: the day the friendship between Marian and Elle turned into estrangement and enmity. Elle found out Marian was going to be attending the same school as she at the Diana Mist College. The witchling had been so excited to hear she had been more than a witch. She was an elemental!

But Marian hadn't understood Elle's resultant aggression. Was it Elle's jealousy that caused their friendship to break down? Or was it that Elle felt her status as the 'better one' in their duo was threatened that did it?

In any case, they fought and things turned sour quickly.

The final breaking point had been when Elle's parents forced Marian's entire coven to move to another location by the order of the Council for Health and Safety. Her parents were soon promoted following this order, both becoming ministers for the Council of Environmental Protection. Whereas her aunt and the coven was forced to do without their Priestess protégé as Marian travelled to Mystic High to begin her elemental studies. To her, Elle had been the one responsible, by association with her parents and the Council, for the evacuation of their coven's sacred grounds.

Unexpectedly, the next scene the visions showed her had been of Chancellor Goff, standing next to someone that looked suspiciously the crazy cultist that she had met in the back gardens that night with Charlotte and Oriane. They were both wearing the long white robes with a tall cap that covered his hair and were smiling at each other. Standing before them was Elle, who was wearing a grey-version of the robes. The symbol of the Rosicrucians, a bright red cross, clearly shown at the front of her garb.
