A/N: okay so I wrote this one at 2am before mother's day and it sounds really stupid now that i think about it...i might take it down and post a better version (this may just be a first draft) but if you see any spelling/grammar mistakes, please tell me because at 2am, my head isn't working properly and my typing gets sloppy. :)

The night was young and so was Emma Swan, a freshman in college who was supposed to show up to classes hung over and not care about anything except for the next big party. Then why was Emma sitting in her dorm room, alone because her roommate went for a night out, reading a book about magic? Emma knew she wasn't the natural college girl, unlike her older sister, but she accepted it. Besides, why waste your energy making stupid mistakes with people whom you don't even know? That was Emma's logic, explain her early nights in.

Emma sighed, not really sure if she wanted to read the ending of the book in her hands or not. Reviews online promised that she would be bawling, and Emma really just needed a happy story to lift her spirits. After she caught boyfriend of two years, Walsh, cheating on her last month before school started and Emma couldn't deal with anything even remotely close to sad.

Emma, just like her mom, always cared for her loved ones with all her heart and she truly believed what she and Walsh had was love. Even true love, maybe, but he went and ruined it all in one night. To make matters worse, Emma left her hometown in Maine to go to a college far away, leaving all her old high school friends behind. She didn't really know anyone, except for her roommate Ruby and a couple of her classmates.

Emma knew she had to meet new people soon enough, but she didn't know how. Emma wasn't very good at trusting people and especially not at giving second chance. But she still wanted to meet someone who wouldn't break her heart like Walsh did. Just three hours, her older sister told her to take a leap of faith and let a cute guy buy her drinks.

Actually her sister Regina said, "Emma, you need to stop hiding in your room and get your ass out to a bar or something. Just meet a cute guy or a new girlfriend and spend the night laughing. I want you to be happy, and moping around isn't going to do that. Start with something small, like going out for a walk or to a coffee shop. Say hi to someone whom you've never talked to before or something along those lines. Just do something out of your comfort zone before I explode." My sister is crazy, Emma decided, but she does have a point.

It was at that moment Emma placed down her book, put on her favourite red leather jacket, fixed her hair, grabbed her wallet and the fake ID Regina hade gotten made for her, and walked out the door. She went over to a local bar not far from the campus and sat down on a barstool and ordered. Emma's palms were sweating when she handed her ID to the pretty bartender, and almost sighed of relief when nothing bad happened. Wow, I'm good at faking my age, she thought to herself.

The bar was busy, but not packed, with just enough people to have a good share to pick someone from. Emma scanned the room, looking for anyone who looked interesting, and sober enough to talk to. She paused when she saw a man, who looked around her age, sitting a couple of seats away. He was devilishly handsome with piercing blue eyes and soft looking, jet black hair pushed back, but Emma wasn't ready to admit that to anyone but herself.

The mystery man smirked when he caught Emma staring at him and Emma quickly looked away. After gulping down a couple of drinks to boost her confidence, she walked over to him and sat down beside him.

"What's your name, love?" The man asked with a heavy Irish accent. He acted so confident, so at ease, that Emma had to pause before she could answer.

"Emma," she replied before giving an awkward hand motion to the bartender asking for another drink, "What's yours, love?"

The man chuckled before saying, "Killian Jones, at your service," in a goofy voice. Killian and Emma both laughed and suddenly, Killian's arrogant confidence and Emma's nervousness disappeared. They both had settled into a nice and fun version of themselves.

After the awkward encounter, the two talked all night long, before he walked her back to her dorm and the exchanged phone numbers, promising to meet up again at the bar next week. And even though it was 5 in the morning and Emma should have been asleep by then, she called Regina, woke up her big sister, and told her all about her night.
