---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hear the beat of my heart on my monitor. My body lies completely still. My mind is awake but my body doesn't respond, I can't even open my eyes. Every single day I struggle trying to move my lips or wiggle my toes. But I can't, the nerves in my body aren't responding to me.

Five months ago, I went into a coma from a blow to the head because of a car accident I got into. The slick black ice on the road made a car crash right into mine going 80 miles per hour. The doctor's announced that my whole body was paralyzed, but I refuse to believe it. I can fight this, I know I can. I'm trying with all my heart to move my fingers, to be able to speak, to be able to feel, anything.

Breathing has become difficult; although I have a breathing tube, it feels like the air has been sucked out of me. The impact of the crash broke two of my ribs which almost punctured my right lung. I've been been healing ever since the success of my surgery that saved my life. I've been knocked out for the first two months. My parent's thought I'd never come out of it, but here I am, able to think and hear, I'm still working on moving and talking. I know I can do it, I know I'm not permanently paralyzed.

I get visits often, and although I can't talk, I can still hear their weeps and compassion, but there's always this one person that never leaves me. I want to open my eyes and see who it is but I don't recognize her voice. I hear her foot steps coming towards me. I feel a brush of fingers against my arm and I feel her warm hand squeeze my mine. Wait.. What?! I can feel that?! Oh thank God! My prayers have been answered. Even though I don't know this person she makes me want to squeeze her hand back. I hear her murmur something but I start drifting into sleep.

I wake up seeing through the red of my eyelids. The sun is on my face, and it feels wonderful. I want to just open my eyes looking at the blinding sun and smile at how beautiful it is outside, but nothing happens... Today, I'm determined to open my eyes and I know I can do it. My eyelids start to flutter and little by little I begin to see more light, then my eyes are wide open I see everything! The hospital bed I'm in, the monitor keeping track of my breathing, heart beat and blood pressure. The last thing I see is this women sleeping in a chair near my bed. So she's the one that's always been here.

I rack through my mind, trying to remember her face, but nothing comes up. I don't recognize this person. Did I hit my head hard enough to have permanent brain loss? No that can't be right, I remember everything else perfectly fine. So who is this lady?

I watch her breathing softly as her chest rises and falls. She looks so peaceful, but you can tell she's lost a lot of sleep. I look at her left hand, so she's not married huh? Well, that's a shocker, she's so beautiful, long brown hair, pretty pink lips, and radiant skin.. I wonder what her eye color looks like. I hear her sigh, I wonder what she's dreaming about. Her eyes begin to flutter open and I start freaking out! What is she going to say to me when she wakes? How is she going to react when she sees me awake? Well, I guess we'll just have to find out.

Her eyes flutter open and she rubs her eyes. She looks at me and the shock registers on her face. A slight gasp escapes her lips followed by a muffled scream. Her lips try to form words and finally she stammers out the word "Matthew..?"
