"I still can't believe you're having them read gruesome murder mysteries." John Raven says, shaking his head, as they walk.
"They are young adults, John." Sally Swift says. "I'm sure they can handle a bit of gruesomeness."
Mike Crow chuckles, as John rolls his dark brown eyes. "I'm all for helping out, but why do you need my help exactly?" John asks.
"Well, you are a murder detective, Dear John." She says, rolling her eyes. "I want you to answer some questions they may have, before they start reading their novel. That way, they can understand it better." She explains.
John sighs. "You know, for a young lady, you're much too outgoing."
She looks at him, smirking. "What gave that away? The fact that I'm a college English professor?" She mock asks.
John brings his face a few inches away from hers. "No, it's your egotistical lordliness."
"Careful, John. People might think you're trying to do something ungentlemanly." Miss Swift says coyly, tilting her head slightly and causing her light, powder brown hair to shift.
"That's ridiculous, because I'm not." John, counters.
"Ahem!" Mike loudly fake coughs, causing the two to separate and look at him confused. "You know, I'm getting quite worn of being you two's third wheel." He comments, his light, red-brown eyes staring at them in annoyance.
"You are not a third wheel, because there is nothing here to be a third wheel to, Mike." John says.
Miss Swift and Mike both roll their eyes, as if both knowing of something being there. They enter Miss Swift's classroom, finding all of her students here and there talking to one another.
"Sorry to be behind everyone. I had to pick up Detective Raven. Mr. Crow has decided to come as well." Swift says to her class, who quickly move to their seats. "Though, lord knows why." She mumbles so John can hear.
He chuckles lightly.
"So, please ask them whatever questions you find will help you better understand mysteries." Miss Swift requests.
"Alright then," One student says, addressing John. "What's so important about detectives? Can't the police just figure things out on their own?" He asks rather rudely.
"Well, you are right, they could. But, what happens if they miss a clue? What happens if they arrest the wrong person?" John asks, only to be met with silence. He leans against Miss Swift's desk. "Then they get all the blame, right? Then you don't trust your police force, and people need to trust their police force."
"Then, you're a scapegoat?" Another student asks, confused.
"In a way, yes." John replies.
"Then why be a detective at all, if you'll just get blamed when something goes wrong?"
"Ah, now there's a good question." John says, his smile changing into a smirk. "Well, that's why I hardly ever get anything wrong." He stands straight, starting to wander between the desks. "See? I specialize in finding every last detail, and treat every one as a clue." He stops at one student's desk, taking the small, traditional, sparrow feather out of the students hat and twirling it. "Isn't that right, Peter Sparrow?" He asks, holding the feather up to the light and looking at it.
"Yes, Sir." Peter replies smiling.
"Maybe they'll better understand if you tell them a story, Mr. Raven." Mike advises.
John puts the feather back in Peter's hat. "A splendid idea!" He shouts.
"One of your mysteries!" One student shouts.
