Chapter Two "Parties"
I was walking home from the corner store, which I only a ten minute walk from my house, when a figure in a gray jacket pinned me against a wall in an alley. Terrified, I was ready to scream and run for my life.
"Don't hurt me!" I kicked and tried to get away.
"I'm not going to hurt you," the person tightened their grip on me, "I want to know, what you know about Sparrow."
"I don't know anything!" I looked and saw the sleeve of the person's jacket sliding down their arm, a freshly manicured hand, with blood red nails, "Who are you?!"
"Relax," she began, "You'll find out soon enough."
The girl released her grip on me and I fell to the ground. I looked around, I was trying to catch my breath and was still a bit dazed. Next thing I saw was that feminine figure running down the alley, I stood up, thought about what just happened, and went about my day normally. If I told my parents what had happened they wouldn't believe me. I was on my own, I would have to figure out what happened to Sparrow by myself.
I walked in the front door, threw my bag on the couch and walked into my dad's office. He was sitting at his computer and typing furiously.
"Hey dad," I greeted, "What are you up to?" I walked up behind him and tried to see what he was so wound up about. But when I tried to get a glimsp of what he was doing, he had already exited out of all the web pages.
"Hey kiddo!" He replied and reached for his glass of coke, "Whatcha need?"
Just great. My dad was acting like everything was fine and dandy, but the reality is, I new he and , my mom were lying straight through there perfect teeth. It kind of made me sick, I mean, how could someone not tell their own child that everyone thinks they killed their best friend?
***
I needed a break from my twisted life, I just wanted to forget about Sparrow's brutal murder and the fact that I am now a person of interest. So I decided to find Jonah, take him up on his offer, and go to the raging kegger he was talking about.
There was people with red cups overflowing with beer, everyone was dancing around and couples were getting all touchy feely. I found Jonah and his group of rebels sitting around smoking in the back of a white, pick-up truck.
"Well look who decided to show up to my party," He joked as he put his arm around me.
"Who's the girl Jonah?" One of his friends asked. She was tattooed all over and had the fakest shade of red as a hair color.
"Guys this is Emily," Jonah set his cup on the truck and began to introduce me to his friends, "The spunky, red head is Katie. The tall one, with the leather jacket is Rogie, and the beautiful, blonde is Naomi."
I took a closer look at Naomi, she was gorgeous, abslutely flawless. She had her blonde hair cut short into a bob, and her skin was a pure ivory. All of her facial features were chisled and fit her perfectly.
"Can I help you?" Noami noticed I was starring at her and was now looking me straight in the eye.
"Uh," I began, I was trying to think of something to say fast, but I was flustered and caught off gaurd, "You're make up is really pretty, what foundation do you use?"
"I don't use make up," Naomi gave me a serious look, then I noticed everyone was looking at me.
"Oh, then you're really pretty," I looked around and all of his friends just broke out in hysterical laughter."
"Loosen up Emily," Rogie began, "Here have a few drinks."
He tossed me a beer from the cooler and I caught it with ease, "Uh, thanks." I cracked it open, tooked a long drink, then gagged a little, his friends laughed at me some more. The taste was unbearable and pungent, I looked oer at Jonah.
"Easy girl," He took the bottle and raised it to his lips, "It's more of a sipping drink."
I sat there with him and his friends and they just talked while I listened. I didn't feel that comfortable talking to them after I made a complete fool of myself earlier. Am I the only one who still feels the embarassing sting even though that embarassing moment has already passed? At one point in the conversation I zoned out and just looked around.
The moon was full and the stars were sprinkled across the sky, but somehow my eyes were drawn back to Naomi. I just couldn't get over how beautiful she was, how could someone's beauty be so easily forgotten? Wait, what? Why am I letting myself get so worked up over this girl?
"Hey Emily, do I know you from somewhere?" My attention then snapped over to Katie, "I could have sworne I have seen you somewhere."
Uh, oh. I think I know what Katie was talking about. After Sparrow's murder, my name and family were all over the tabloids and press. Just some news reporters looking for a story, and I was the only witness. I guess at the time, my parents had no problem exploiting their child's traumatizing event and sharing it with the whole country.
"Um, nope," I quickly got up and reached for another can of beer, "Maybe I just look like someone you've seen..." I cracked open my fifth beer and chugged it down.
"Careful Emily," Katie started, "You don't want to get hammered."
I took off my jacket and threw it behind Jonah, "It's really hot out here don't you think?" I took another swig of beer, "I'm going to get some more of these for us. I quickly stampered off, pretending that I knew where I was going. I walked off for about five minutes, only to realize I was going nowhere, I wasn't drunk, but I wasn't tipsy either. I was like some inbetween stage of being drunk. I sat down against the trunk of a tree.
"I'm telling you I know here from somewhere," Katie's voice echoed through the forest.
Curious, I turned and looked past the tree, I had walked in a giant circle, only Jonah and his friends didn't realize that I was listening.
"Come on now," Jonah began, "Emily's cool, she's only been around for a couple of hours and you're acting like a jealous two year old."
"That bitch is hiding something," Katie took a moment to think, "You know what? I bet she's the girl who was with Sparrow when she died."
"Of all times, you're going to bring that up now?" Rogie interupted, "I thought you were done with all that crap."
"Shut the fuck up guys," Naomi said, "I think she's on her way back."
I quickly got up and stampered back to them. I was pretending to act more intoxicated than I actually was. "Hey guys! Guess what? I couldn't find anymore beer. But I think I am going to head home I'm getting a little nauseous."
"Leaving so soon? Here let me drive you, I don't want you to get behind the wheel all drunk." Jonah put my jacket on his shoulder and grabbed my waist, his warm hands pressed against my cold skin. Of all things to wear I chose a freaking crop top. Smooth move Emliy.
"Oh I don't knoooowwww," I spun around while grabbing my jacket off his shoulder, "I think I will take a cab."
"With what money?" Jonah looked me in the eye and he knew something was wrong.
"Okay, cut the bullshit," Katie stood up and got in my face, "Are you the girl who was Sparrow Evans get shot?!"
I stood there motionless, frozen. I didn't know what to say, apparently they knew who Sparrow was, but Sparrow never said anything about hanging out with a bunch of pot heads and alcoholics. I opened my mouth like I was about to say something but I was interupted. Over the blasting music I began to hear sirens and then flashing red and blue lights. Oh no, now we were in more trouble.
