The small boy's face stared straight at me curiously, not afraid at all. He has messy black hair. His emerald-green eyes not flinching away when I looked at him. Questions started running through my mind like 'Where you there the whole time?' 'What is someone your age doing in the forest alone?' 'How did you get here on your own?' 'What's your name?'
But oddly the first thing I asked was '"Isn't the waterfall pretty?" He nods shyly. "What are you?" I blink. "You mean... Who am I?" "No, I mean, are you a bad person? With no eyes?" No eyes.. He meant the wights. "Oh god no, I'm a peculiar" "With magickey powers! Like me?" "Yeah what can you do?"
He looks around nervously, as if we were being spied on, then standing on his tiptoes he whispers in my ear proudly. "I can teleport!" I widen my eyes. "Cool.. Where can you teleport then?" "Everywhere! I think.. I can't go somewhere I've never seen or... Been, like" "What about if you see a photo of the place?" "Emm.. I dunno, I never tried that" Out of the corner of my eye, I see Nyla appearing at the top of the waterfall, shielding her eyes from the sun that is now on the other side of the fall. "Ella... I see you've found the peculiar that's been trailing us" The boy looks scared upon seeing her and 'pop!' and he disappears.
"Nyla!" I shout up at her, cheated of an opportunity to talk to someone else other than her for months. "Oops.." She looks slightly embarrassed.. And annoyed at me, but that quickly seems to disappear from her face.
"It's okay, he can't have teleported far, if you can't concentrate, your powers don't work half as well. I hope." She said that part quieter, but I heard as she careened over to me. "Sooo.. What do we do?" I ask, looking up at her. "We wait. Little kids are curious, like you. He'll come back" "Hey!" I pushed her playfully when she called me 'little'.
My stomach rumbled, and I looked down frowning. "Well.. I'm not walking around a forest looking for a kid that can teleport without eating first" "Ugh, 'kay" She bit her lip. "Problem." "What?" "Unless I go catch something, we have no food. And after all the noise we've been making plus the fact we are near a road means everything is probably gone too," She said all this so cheerfully my tired brain hardly registered it.
"So.. No food?"
"Yeah, that's what I'm trying to tell you"
I groaned. "We have to go look for him, don't we?"
Nyla suddenly stiffened. I looked around, seeing her concentrated face, "What? Why are you doing that?" "Shhhhh" She murmured, glaring at me, her eyes turning lighter, golden in the sunlight. I rolled my eyes but didn't move, Nyla was hardly ever serious, but when she was, she was very serious. The girl reached back, into a small bag I never really noticed, pulling out a long dagger or maybe short sword. "Th-that's what you killed the hollow with" I said quietly.
She nodded. Then I see three figures slowly walk out from nowhere. (Probably from behind trees, but honestly I didn't hear even a rustle) My eyes rushed to their eyes, a man and a woman. Blank, white eyes. The third I realised was a hollow, but this time the hollow wasn't injured like the one I had 'fought' It was one in perfect condition. There was a buzzing in my ears and the sky turned ash-grey and started to rumble.
There was a loud gunshot, but before anyone could even do anything, before the hollow jumped, A small hand grabbed me from behind, the world went black and I felt the weirdest sensation ever, as if I was being squeezed through a very tight tube of.. Toothpaste or something. And I have never been claustrophobic, but I was overwhelmed by a giant feeling of clautrophobia. Then everything ended. I got sick on the ground, then looked to see where I was.
The boy was standing there, who was trembling. Nyla was beside me as well looking nauseous, but more controlled. After realising I was not in a forest, there were no wights or hollows and I finally put two and two together. We had teleported! The boy looked up at us curiously again. "D-did I help? I saw the scary people were there, and I disappeared so th-they wouldn't hurt me. But then I-I remembered y-yous were there, and you can help me find m-my mum and dad"
Nyla spoke up first "Thank you so much, we owe you. Even we probably couldn't have gotten away from two adult wights as well as a hollow." She grinned at me "What's your name? Where are your mum and dad?" she asked the boy gently. "I'm Kit James, and I'm seven. Almost eight" he added. "The people with the white eyes.. You called them.. W-wights?" He asked uncertainly. "They d-did something. Took my mum and dad, and I have to get them back." He looked very determined, sure that he would find them.
When I could see straight, I nodded to him. I looked around to see where he had brought us. I still felt slightly nauseous for some reason. Then I realised why when I looked out the window in the small 'room' we were in. We weren't in a room at all. We were on a ship (More like a yacht when I think back on it. The 'window' lead to the sea, rocking back and forth, back and forth, back and forth in a weird mesmerising way. "Lucky that there's nobody else in his cabin" I breathed. I turned to Kit. "You know where we are?" He looked uncertain, then nodded. "We're on a big boat! I know that we went on holidays to a sunny place on this boat, we had nice ice cream. And we stayed in this room. I thought it was sooo boring but mum and dad always said it was the best holiday ever"
Nyla suddenly winced for some reason. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah.. There's some buzzing in my ears.." She shakes her head, "Nevermind that, we have to find out where exactly we are" ".. On a boat" I answer. "Yeah but where's the boat" Nyla sounded very irritated, she must have a very bad headache, I thought.
She plonks herself down on the small bunkbed pushed to a corner of the cabin, looking at the little clock on the all. "It's.. Early morning here, like 5 in the morning" She screws her face up in concentration. "So.. We're probably somewhere really far away.." "Wow, Kit, you're a champion teleporter!" I muttered to him quietly, smiling. Nyla suddenly spoke up, looking up towards the window, I almost jumped.
"Oh my god. We're in New Zealand"
