I guess it all changed the day Landon decided to try out for the quarterback position that had been left empty after Knox Langley's shocking resignation from the football team. I was sitting on the bleachers among several litters of cheering skinny girls in skimpy outfits, feeling like I had stepped into an entirely different universe. While the blonde in front of me stood up and nearly flashed me her bottom, I talked myself out of leaving and remembered, instead, the sole reason I was here. Landon needed my moral support, though I knew next to nothing about football, or any other sport for that matter, I wasn't going to let him down.
And as I watched Landon play, going over various drills designed to test his stamina and endurance and everything else required of a quarterback, I wondered how on Earth had I missed the fact that my best friend was actually really good at it. He seemed to breeze through the course, unlike the previous guys who had almost died at the end of it, and I daresay that there was a huger than life chance of Landon landing that quarterback position.
The girls around me must have felt the same way because their incessant fangirling only increased as Landon trashed the hundred meter sprint in under eleven seconds (according to the girls; I wouldn't have known).
"Oh my god, did you see him run?"
"Are you kidding? Look at his muscles!"
"I wonder how he looks like underneath all that gear."
"Oh I would definitely do him!"
"Why haven't we seen him around before? Is he on the team?"
"I don't think so. I would've noticed if he was."
"Maybe he's new?"
"Girls, we need to get his number."
"I wonder if he'll -"
"I'm sure he's not interested in girls like you," I cut in, turning around to glare at the litter behind me. I was getting extremely annoyed at the way they were talking about my best friend and the surprise on their perfectly made-up faces satisfied me.
"Excuse me?" The red-haired one sitting in the middle came out of shock first. She narrowed her eyes at me and I could almost see the gears turning inside her head as she tried to figure out who I was.
"Landon likes girls with real stuff up there," I continued, somewhat enjoying this.
Red's lips curled inwards in disdain as she got the insult. "I'm sorry but who are you?"
"Landon's best friend," I said and tossed her the sweetest smile I could muster. With that, I spun around and moved down the bleachers towards our quarterback to-be as he waved me over like it's right on cue.
As I threw my arms around Landon in a congratulatory hug despite him being slick with sweat, I heard the faintest chuckle that should not have meant anything. But as it was, I had been shamelessly stalking a certain brown haired beauty, so I knew that chuckle, and I was correct in assuming so as I caught a glimpse of the most intoxicating smile in my peripheral vision.
And for a fleeting moment, those warm chocolate eyes met mine, and the grin widened. But as it was, the moment was gone in an instant, just like every other encounter I'd had with Knox Langley.
