Chapter #1: Incipit to An Irish Girl in Birmingham (in which a girl from Belfast meets Birmingham)
Louise Byrne was not thekind of woman into marriage and raising a family. So, when she turned25 and when her family, back in Belfast, insisted for her to find asuitable man to marry, she cramed her clothes in a large piece ofluggage and went to... England! She had no place to stay in and not alot of things to eat in her bag but at least she was free! She knewshe could not make a living of her own in London (too expensive, tooloud) and that's how she arrived in Birmingham. Only some hoursafter, she found a job in a family business, Shelby Limited. Ignoringthe fact that the businesses the family dealt with were not thatlegal, she was trained to be a personal assistant. She thought it oddfor her boss not to introduce himself (back in Northern Ireland, itwas a custom) but still worked quite hard in her job.
