Hermione's pov
I never thought I'd come back to Hogwarts, but here I am! Professor Mcgonagall gave us all permission to stay on an extra year because of the lack of education we had during the reign of Voldemort. I climb out of the carriage and, due to the immensely heavy rain splashing down on me, pull the hood of my robes over my head and sprint to the gigantic oak front doors that welcome me home. Happily, I sit down at the Gryffindor table in the great hall and, a second later, Harry comes and takes the seat next to me, then Ron opposite. I don't know if I mentioned this earlier, but during the summer, me and Ron split up; we decided that our love was more brotherly/sisterly than sexual, although since then it has been incredibly awkward between us. Ginny does not sit with us as she and Harry also broke up before school started; apparently, they had an argument, although neither if them will admit to what it was about. Looking round the hall, I see a lot of familiar faces, but at the same time, I see lots of people missing; this saddens, me knowing how Voldemort ripped apart so many families and left so much unrepairable destruction.
Another exciting thing happening this year was that I'd been made deputy head girl; Mcgonagall would've made me head girl only she presumed, and presumed right, that I would like to spend this year mostly relaxing, but still have a minor bit of power. According to Parvati, Padma has been made head girl and Ernie Macmillan head boy. The deputy head boy is none other than Neville Longbottom which is surprising though I do think he grew up a lot last year and deserves the role. Speaking of Neville, his relationship with Luna is still going strong which is great because they definitely belong together.
The hall doors suddenly open and in march the first years ready to be sorted. I see three boys, two brown haired, one blond haired, look round in amazement at the hall and all of its spectacular features. Before placing the sorting hat upon the stool as usual, Professor Mcgonogall steps up to the podium to make a speech.
"Attention students" she began "due to the fact that we have eight years of students instead of seven, the school's governors and I have thought it necessary to open up a new house which will be called 'Dumbledore' after our deceased headmaster. To qualify for Dumbledore, you will have to have the qualities from all the houses so you will have to be brave, loyal, cunning and smart. Some of you already housed students will be moved in order to fill space."
The professor flicked her wand and a another table appeared out of no where.
"If your name is called then please move to sit on this new table"
I wasn't sure if I wanted to move or not because it would be an honour to be put in Dumbledore's house but I didn't want to leave my friends.
"Students redoing first year who will be moving house - Bob Morgan, Tanya Smith, Elizabeth Bow, Rhys Hoy"
These students stood up and gladly moved to their new home.
"Students redoing second year who will be moved - "Sophie Turner..."
More students were moved, including Luna, when suddenly it was time for the students redoing seventh year to get called out.
"Neville Longbottom, Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger"
I moved in awe over to the Dumbledore table and sat down with Luna and Neville. I still couldn't decide if I was happy with the new arrangements or not but before I knew it the sorting hat was performing its song for this year:
'A thousand years ago,
When this school was just new.
The founders told the students 'I know!
'We've got a way to split you'
Each founder was given a house to there name,
To reflect their personalities
And the students they each wanted to gain...'
The song continued through several verses and was definitely the best song yet. It made me sad knowing that this was the last one I'd most probably ever hear. The new pupils then began to get sorted.
'Benjamin Andrews' was the first name called out and he was sorted in to Hufflepuff.
The second name was Faye Clare who looked so nervous that I thought she might throw up but she managed to gain a place in Ravenclaw.
Names continued to be called out and by the time they had finished I was absolutely starving so when the feast arrived I quickly dug in and had seconds also.
At the end of dinner, all of my new house were asked to stay behind so that we could be told details about Dumbledore. Apparently the crest would be a Phoenix on a silver background and the common room would be situated behind the painting of the tea party on the seventh floor. We were also told, and this piece of information made me feel very happy indeed though Malfoy clearly felt the complete opposite due to the fact that he had his head in his hands, that Hagrid would be our head of house.
Neville, Luna and I were the first up to the common room. I said the password (flobber worms) and we entered. The room was very stylish: there were silver curtains, glass tables, grey couches, silver carpet and a blazing fire place. I already love this place!
