It was her birthday. I should have known something was wrong when I entered her home, surprised to find only her. There was a note on the table, money taped next to it. Had I been smarter I would have taken her away that day, making sure to enjoy her smile every time I saw it.
Amelia's eyes were red from crying, but she told me it was lack of sleep. Excitement. I handed her a present, my heart thumping against my ribs. She flashed me one of her famous smiles, pulling the small silver wristband out of the box. It was an infinity symbol, matching the one I had previously put on.
This was the day I saw the scars on her arm for the first time. I attributed it to an accident, or your cat, seeing as he had been described as having a fiery temper. But no cat could leave scars that deep, that long, that wide. Instead of offering my help, I kept my mouth shut, enjoying the moment with her.
