A lone bluejay fluttered down onto a branch to rest. A small camera hangs around his neck, unused at the moment but would be used soon. Night was approaching and he was far from his nest. His mate and chick would be waiting for him. The pine grosbeak he called his mate would worry about him, he knew it.
In the distance, from deeper into the old woods, a crow cawed his nightly song of foreboding. The sound sent chills through the bluejay's wings. The wind blew from that direction, with it carried the distinct scent of a freshly lit cigarette.
He sighed. He knew he needed somewhere to stay, for the darkness and night made him paranoid. That overwhelming sense of anxiety was nothing but a problem. Rather than taking flight and going back to his own nest, which was a quarter of a mile in the other direction, he took off in the crow's direction.
The crow glanced up from taking a drag of his cigarette to see the bluejay flying in his direction. "What the hell...?" He muttered under his breath before crushing the cigarette under his taloned foot. He squinted at the quickly approaching bird with confusion until realization hit him...along with the other bird. "Jay, what-" Thud.
"Ah- Tim, sorry!" The bluejay said with a surprised squawk. He quickly righted himself on the branch of the tree they were sitting on. He hadn't realized he was flying that fast until he damn-near knocked the both of them to the ground
The crow shook himself to brush off the feeling of sudden impact. "God damn Jay, what the hell has gotten into you?" He said, trying to keep his voice calm so he didn't sound too angry. Good thing he had kept his broken wing away from the bluejay because if that hit didn't break it again, he didn't know what would.
"Sorry, Tim. Sorry," The bluejay said, turning his gaze to his talons digging into the branch. "It's just...you know how I am at night...especially since that snowy owl and his raven companion showed up..." He pecked at his own wing for a bit as a kind of distraction from the setting sun.
The black bird sighed and shook his head. "I assume you're about to ask if you can stay in my nest tonight?"
"Yeah," The bluejay confirmed, nodding his head. "I mean, can I please though? I don't like the woods at night and I really don't like flying around at night."
The crow shrugged and seemed to smile a bit before dropping down into a hollow in the tree trunk. "Come on, scardy-bird," He said with a slight mocking tone in his voice.
The bluejay chirped a thank you before dropping into the hollow himself. "I appreciate the help Tim," He said with sincerity.
"So, you got any leads on that owl and his connection to Alex?" The crow said, grabbing a match from a small nook on the side of the hollow and striking it with his beak. A small flame sparked at the end of the match, filling the previously pitch black space with a flickering yellow light. "I mean, with as much as you've been following the case," He held the flame to a candle that he had dragged in from...somewhere.
The bluejay nodded. "Yeah," A small shudder passed through his body as the warmth flowed through the space inside the tree. "I mean I figured out as much as I know that he's controlling Alex in some way."
"How much has Katie been able to help you?" The crow asked with a tone of legitimate question in his words. "I mean, I know you have a chick now so I wouldn't think much,"
"Surprisingly enough, she's been able to help a lot," The bluejay said as a small smile laced his beak. "She managed to get a tracking chip stuck to Alex's wing and she's been monitoring wherever that crazy-ass hawk goes."
"A tracking chip?" The crow squawked with surprise. "Where in the hell did she get a tracker? I mean, I know she's a damn good scavenger but still,"
"Hell if I know," The bluejay responded, giving a wing-shrug. "I don't know where or how she got it, I just know that she got it and it's on Alex's wing as we speak."
"Wouldn't Alex be able to feel it, though?" He lit another cigarette with the flame from the candle. He took a drag and blew a smoke ring through his beak.
"I guess she must've already thought about that," He responded, before fluttering his wings and yawning. "I kinda just want to get some sleep. I've been awake for a few days." He settled himself into the dry, straw-like grass that laid over the floor of the hollow.
"Get some sleep, Jay. You've worked hard enough," The crow said before blowing out the candle and popping outside to finish the cigarette. Smoke floated up from his beak as he started off into the night. He was lost in thought...
...until he saw the large, pure white snowy owl staring at him from a tree far off.
