⠀⠀▸ Who needs real friends when you have powers like mine?

┅⠀

There I sat in a designer white-leather sofa, comfortably watching the news on my high-definition, flat screen TV. I'm not particularly bragging, because I'm not rich. But I do hold a special power that allows me to create whatever I want with my imagination and creativity. 'Well, yes, Daniel. Anyone can create something with their imagination and creativity. Haven't you heard of artists?' No. That's not exactly it.

I can create these images- these projections -and make them real.

I don't know the specifics, but what I do know is that at its most subatomic level, everything in the universe is made up of the same basic materials. And I was born with the ability to rearrange that material at will. It could be a new pet dog, a motorcycle, or even my family and friends. My diseased family and friends.

I know they aren't exactly the real thing, but they seem like it. And after twelve years of being alone, you get pretty good at bringing them back. It's like a recipe that you made over and over again; soon enough you can make it in your sleep. Which, in my case, isn't exactly an exaggeration. Sometimes, deep down, I may feel lonely, scared, or confused- without even knowing it. And in effect my parents or best friends appear by my side, willing to help me cope with whatever I'm dealing with.

And today I was dealing with boredom.

"Aggggh!" I leaned back, stretching my arms up and over behind me, "Guys! It's the first day in a month since we had nothing serious to do." And with that, my friends fabricated out of thin air and walked into the room, greeting me as they did.

"That couch better not be real leather!" That's Emma. A year younger than I, she's small with her dark hair cut short, and always wearing comfortable clothes- particularly ones you could hike in. She loves Mother Earth and all it's critters... insects included.

"Oh come on, it's just a couch!" There's Joe, who was already picking up a box of Cheez-Its that was left on the coffee table from last night. This guy was all stomach, and he knew it too. I don't think there has been a single second that this guy wasn't hungry, which is crazy, because he's super skinny. Joe is also messy and not the most athletic guy around, but he's the funniest, sarcastic motormouth I know. And so I can't help but love him.

"Joe, if only we girls had your metabolism." And there came Dana who sat beside me, leaning over to get a good look at Joe who was chowing down on his snack while he sat criss-crossed on the floor. Now Dana was something else. Not only was she beautiful, with her pin-straight hair flowing down her back (you should see it when it blows in the wind), but she's also the most genuine person I have ever known. No ego, no big head, no agenda. Just Dana.

"Hey guys! I got a new deck of cards at the gas station we stopped at in the last town. Does anyone want to play Speed with me?" And then there was Willy, walking in with a deck of cards in hand. Taller than I with jet-black hair, he was Emma's older brother, and I could always count on him. Ready, willing, and able to try anything. If there is anyone who loves chasing down aliens as much as I do, it's Willy.

"Hey!" I stood and walked over to him, greeting him with a fist-bump. "I'll gladly go against you any day."

Willy groaned and rolled his eyes, but you could tell he was excited. My friend chuckled, "Fine, but don't pull any tricks on me this time! Let's keep it fair and no super-speed."

I laughed and nodded, pinching his nose playfully as I did, "Ok, but I can't promise anything!" And in that very moment, he seemed to grow dimmer, like he was about to disappear.

Willy shouted, "Hey hey! No making me 'magically' disappear in the middle of the game, either!"

I let go of his nose as I brought the rest of him back just as slowly as I made him leave, and I laughed along with everyone else in the room. "Deal, deal."

When you think about it, creating is the best superpower of them all.
