the walk from the beach to my house is 5 minutes if you go the back way over the train tracks, it can be quite scary at night you just have to be cautious.

"hey mills? ava asks while eating her ice cream, that we brought from caleb in the beach cafe she had chocolate covering her cheeks.

"yeah?" i grin at her as i hold her hand as we cross the train tracks.

"who was that girl on the swings with you?" she says as she gets chocolate on her nose.

"honestly ava, i have no idea." i wipe the chocolate off her nose.

"she has cool hair." ava chuckles slightly as we walk up our driveway, i kneel down and use the sleeve of my jacket to wipe her cheeks.

"don't tell mum okay." i smile.

when we walked through the door my mum was cooking lasagna in the kitchen, she was singing quietly to herself.

"smells good ma." i take off my jacket and place it in the washing basket in the laundry.

"how was the park ava? got any new shells?" my mum bends down to avas height and she pulls a small shell out of her pocket, my mum smiles at her and places the shell in a big jar of seashells on the shelf beside her.

"it was good, millie and i walked past felicity and she has a puppy and i got to see one of millies new friends." ava looks up at mum and skips off to her room.

"new friend huh?" my mum shrugs her shoulders at me playfully.

"yeah uh, her name is sadie she's just moved here from california with her dad, she seems pretty cool." i say as i take a bite out of one of the apples on the bench.

"mills.." my mum teases.

"it's not like that mum, i know exactly 4 things about her." i nudge her side and look up to the roof.

"okay, okay, are you ready for dinner cause i'll plate it up?" she reaches down and grabs 3 plates.

"yeah, just give me 10 i'm gonna go for a shower real quick." i walk to the back of the house and grab a towel.

the first thing that came to my attention in the bathroom mirror was that my shoulders were slightly sunburnt, i turned on the cool water and stepped in, my brain turned back to sadie, she seemed so content with life perhaps we could become good friends. consumed in my thoughts i jumped when ava knocked on the bathroom door for me to get out of the shower. 

i plaited my hair and put on a shirt and walked back to the kitchen, mum was smiling at me giddily

"mum considering you weren't giving me that look 10 minutes ago you're either worried i won't like your food or you have good news."

"good news darling, i forgot to tell you, charlie sent a letter." she says passing me a green envelope with "millipede" in gold calligraphy.

Charlie is my brother who is in the navy, i haven't seen him in three years, he's called me millipede for as long as i can remember, to this day i don't think he's ever called me millie.

"well go on, open it love." my mum smiles.

much like the envelope the paper was sage green and had gold writing, the letter read.

happy belated birthday nerd i miss you so very much, i had so many things to tell you and now i can't think.

how's mum and ava? i hope they're going okay and i hope ava is still wreaking havoc, aunty ruth told me that she heard of harper moving in with sean.

and the main reason i'm writing to you is to give you a massive fucking congratulations, i can't believe you came out, well by the time you get this it's probably been a little bit since but either way i'm so proud of you, i told you mum would be over the moon for you.

i'll be home as soon as i can, i love you so much shithead.

i started to tear up by this, i missed charlie a lot, our school principal mr keery, or joe as we better know him is charlie's fiancé, i know he misses him too, he's  genuinely one of the most incredible people i've ever met, charlie and joe went to school together and met up again about 6 years ago on tinder, when i found out joe got a job at my school as principal i wasn't that happy, the thought of my brother in law watching my every move wasn't really the vibe i was going for. but it turned out to be the best thing cause i can get away with doing dumb shit.

"you okay mills?" my mum squeezes my shoulder and hugs me from behind.

"yeah ma, just missing him that's all." i grin slightly

"me too baby, we'll see him before you know it." she kisses my temple and we sit down to eat dinner.

that night ava and i both fell asleep on the couch beside my mum, my brain filled of thoughts, when will charlie come home? why are tv infomercials so repetitive? and what the hell happened today?
