ALZAR WAS DREAMING.
He found himself in that familiar blank landscape, knees tucked under his chin.
“Abaddon,” he whispered, lifting his head, watching the black apparition that hovered over him. Abaddon appeared as a bear, with fur that wavered and crackled like fire. Two white spheres sunk low in his head, vivid and clear.
Alzar’s lip trembled. He threw himself around Abaddon’s massive neck, burying his face in the misty fur. Chills went down his spine when they came in contact, like electricity bolting through his body.
“Listen to me, Alzar,” a voice fell across his ears, unearthly. He had never heard Abaddon speak, not like this.
Alzar wasn't sure how to respond. He didn't know if he could. Slowly, he nodded.
“I need you to run for your life. Run and get as far away from that woman as you can. Do you understand?”
Alzar’s eyes widened as he pulled away, facing Abaddon with a pale face. “Run?”
“As fast as you can, Alzar.”
----
Alzar’s eyes snapped open as he sat up, rubbing his arms. He was sweating through his clothes, but he was shivering.
Run. That's what Abaddon had said.
Fancy was nowhere to be seen. Alzar tugged his hand from his back, blood coating his fingertips. Was this his chance? Was he really going to escape?
Above him, birds shrieked, making him throw his hands over his head. A flock passed over him, small blots on a mottled grey sky. The air was oppressively wet, the harbinger of yet another thunderstorm.
His foot sank into the ground as he took a heavy step forward. Alzar swallowed down a twinge of fear and began to run.
