Their only regular encounters after the project were some words in science or English, and when they were walking to lunch. They rarely talked because they were both extremely awkward and Hazel was in the midst of developing crippling social anxiety, whilst having a rough time at home. She feared she'd say too much and scare Lucas away, so she said nothing and waited for him to initiate interaction. Until one day he had both headphones in his ears and she couldn't stand the thought of him not being able to hear her because she knew he listened, and it bothered her when he couldn't for some reason that she couldn't understand. She made a point to ask him what he was listening to and he fumbled with the answer and instead settled on giving her both earbuds instead, and she laughed at this awkward encounter. It showed that maybe he liked her too, but she'd never ever say to him that she liked him. He also switched to her table one day, claiming to be mad at his friends but she knew his friends were loud and abnoxious and he wasn't so she never thought any deeper into it.
