Deep down under that scowl, I could tell she was hiding something. When I spoke about my pains and sorrows, I could tell that I was breaking her. In her eyes, I could see a flash of Ame, of some humanity. She didn't speak at first.
"Tell him, Midnight," Astrid said,"Tell them why you-why both of you-screwed your friends over."
When she looked at him, her face softened,"I...I"
Kaldur put a hand on her lap,"It's ok, love."
--------
"After Astrid was born, why didn't y'all come back to us?" I asked,"You still had family to go to."
"I don't know." Ame scratched her leg.
"Kaldur...you killed your own father?" M'gann asked.
"He killed my children! If I had killed him before, none of this would have happened." Kaldur jumped up in defense.
Ame held him down and rubbed his back.
Connor joined,"We don't kill, Kaldur. You know that."
"And that's what made you weak. It's what made me weak. It's what killed my family." He glared at the team.
"We know that he did awful things but that doesn't mean you get to parade around and be the bad guy." Dick said.
"How would you feel if someone you've been battling for half your life, threatens your family?" Kaldur sat up a little more,"How would you feel if they kidnapped them, tortured the woman you loved, that was pregnant with your unborn child? How would you feel if you couldn't sleep for months because you were trying to find your family only to find them all dead?!"
The team was quiet.
I looked at Ame, who was staring at her son. She looked completely broken. I looked over to Astrid. His face was tight and his eyes were unforgiving. He didn't care if they were begging on their knees. He wouldn't take their apologies or pleads. And I think Ame knew that.
I saw her lip tremble. Then the tears followed. She covered her mouth with her shaking hands,"I surrender."
Kaldur and the team looked shocked.
"I'm sorry!" She sobbed,"Please forgive me!"
We looked at Astrid but his face never changed. It stayed cold as his mother begged him for forgiveness.
