Chapter Five

Once I begin to smell the crisp air of...we'll everything- I know that Times Square is close by. I take a turn up 44th street and stop at 45th, right I front of the hotel I work. It's tall, but no where near as big and posh as others, even though I've lived here my whole life, things still seem big and intimidating to me. People may think that this big city seems to make you confident and bold, but that's the exact reason I'm the way I am- it just reminds me of how small and insignificant I am. But I love it all the same.

I push open one of the two large doors and I find myself grinning at the familiar voice of Samantha echoes through the lobby, along with the overrated classy music in the background.

"Hey"

I flash a smile at her and her tanned skin and curly brown hair. Sam is the sort of girl I could imagine being in a high school musical movie or something. I've heard her singing before to, when she's alone- it's really pretty, her voice I mean.

"What shifts?" She asked, grinning.

"Four to eight," I reply with a small smile hers seems to have faded slightly "what about you?"

"Girl, I've told you that you shouldn't be workin the long hours!" She seems to scold gently, her voice filled with sympathy and a typical New York accent. "You've got school tomorrow." She tilts her head slightly, Sam is twenty so she works two jobs.

"Keeps me busy" I walk into the bathroom to change, I care for her worry but I don't need it. I change into my black, yellow and white uniform and then check my timetable. I will be working in the dining room, and then at room service.

After a bout an hour of setting tables and serving the few guests that come in the afternoon and then I head up stairs to room service, my favourite. I don't always mind tidying up other peoples things as long it's not too messy. It's somewhat entertaining because it gives me an idea of what it would be like to live someone else's life. But most of all, the thing I love the most is the view. And it's usually perfect, just as the sun goes down.

I happily skip upstairs, I find my first room, and check my clip bored.

'LONGTERM' it sates clearly- so I shouldn't really clean much, just make the bed, empty trash, clean the toilet and things like that. I knock on the door, and politely call "housekeeping!" Just as I was taught. When there's no answer I use my card to swipe open the door. I quietly steep in.

Sometimes the person will be sleeping and I have to walk out- there's a skinny man in room 104 who snores so loud, you can hear it from outside the door. Last year we all had a laugh while Suzie went to stuff a sock in his mouth to make hime be quiet. But he woke up shortly after and she simply said "oh my, didn't see ya' there" he could of told and gotten her fired but we all think he has a crush on her (he gives her unreasonably large tips).

This room is cleaner than the others I have visited, it smells of cologne and all things new. I walk over to the window and the view is so pretty even though it's just the tops of roofs. I love it. There isn't much to clean here, I just clean the toilet, the smell of cologne comes from here. So it's a man living here, who is kind of neat, has a laptop, and ate Pop-tarts for breakfast- I giggle at his childish behaviour.

Once I finish my shifts I put on a jacket and head home, the cool are wraps around my body, and my hands, face and ankles get cold. It's dark outside, but everything is still so awake.

I arrive at my apartment, it's no where near as fancy as the ones I work at. I decide to take the elevator, since it's been a long Monday... And it's fun! I feel myself rise slightly as it comes to a stop, I step out and head towards our door. I swing it open and hear the light, yet quick pads of doorsteps and then a small creak. I grin.

"Willow" I call quietly, a small smile tugging at the ends of my lips. I push open her door and stitch on the light. The shape of her body outlines the doña and I hear giggling. My arm yanks the sheets and she let's out a scream.

"Shhhh" I giggle "Mums gone?" I whisper and she shakes her head. My eyebrows raise, she's always gone around this time

"No, she is but..." She shakes her head again, a cheeky grin appears.

"Hmm, not going to talk huh?" I question "might just have to tickle it out of ya" I state and she tries to hide.

After minutes of hiding and laughing we stop.

Meow

I sigh, willows anxious eyes glance at me, and then the tabby.

"Still feeding that thing" I groan, she knows I'm allergic to cats.

"Danica, it has nowhere to go, and besides it keeps me company when your gone" she tells me, getting the leftover chicken from the fridge and gently placing it on the floor. Her petite figure makes its way to the couch, ever since she was a toddler (right after she stopped looking like squashed, bald rabbit) I knew she was going to grow up beautiful. Her fair skin, blonde hair and big blue eyes all make up that adorable child model look. She's always wanted to do that- be in advertisements and such, but we've never had the money.

"Bedtime Lo" I call.

"okay" she pecks my cheek "Night"

I'd better take myself off to bed too, it's been a long day. I snuggle up in my bed and fluffy socks, I pull out my new book "Beautiful Disaster" and begin to read.
