An Unusual Night

I sat in my last class wondering how my friends convinced me to "explore" the school after hours. I without a doubt had some ambitious friends, but I would have to admit, I am the black sheep out of that group. I guess ending your first year of high school comes with new expectations. Cody did a good job telling me that one. Something along the lines of, "You're not going to be a freshman anymore, and you need to live it up in your best years of high school! This is the coolest way to go,man."

I checked my phone for the time. Ten minutes left. After a few hours of hanging out together, we are all supposed to come back here. To explore the building at night. It would have sounded more fun if my friends weren't as accident prone or clumsy with the rules. I have to admit, even if I am not excited in the slightest, I am a bit curious of what might happen tonight. I always thought that the most interesting things can happen under the darkness of the night, whether your at a school or in some abandoned area.

The bell rang. I stuffed my things into my bag and headed for the door. I started to walk to our usual meeting place, which is the skate park. I checked my phone, and sure enough there is a text from both Cody and Mitchell. They were just reminding me about tonight. As if I needed one for something like this. Once I reached the park, my friends were already waiting for me.

"Hey Lawrence! Cody just came up with a good way to get into the school tonight!" Mitchell says a bit too loud.

"Mitchell! Shut up! You're going to make us look suspicious!" I whispered.

"Don't act like such a wuss. I am surprised you have attempted things like this before by now anyways." Cody chimes in.

Mitchell rolls his eyes and starts to search his bag.

"What are you digging for?" I ask.

"I found a couple of useful things in here that I grabbed from my dad's garage."

"Ooh did you get a crowbar or sledgehammer?" Cody asks, excited.

"You never told me we'd be vandalizing! That will for sure get us in some deep shit." I groan in frustration.

"That kind of comes with breaking into the school at night  you know that right Lawrence?"

I sigh and wait for him to pull out whatever "tools" were going to be used tonight.

Mitchell pulls out clamps, some lock picks, and to Cody's approval, a crowbar.

" Aw this is going to be sweeeeet!" Cody chuckled.

Before having any second thoughts on all of this I asked Cody and Mitchell what time we were going to the school.

"Most likely at ten or later." Cody shrugged.

Mitchell slyly puts on his blue beanie over his blond mop of a head.

"Maybe we'll brag to the ladies after, hehehe." He grins.

" That'll just make it easier for the teachers or police to find out. Lawrence is right about the whole thing involving us getting into a screwed up situation." Cody adds.

"Whatever. I'll see you guys at school in a few hours alright?" I sigh.

"Got it."

"Got it"

*Later that evening*

The sky was dark and the clock read "9:50 pm"

I decided that this was a good time to start heading the the school. I face palmed at the thought of getting caught or into trouble. If Cody and Mitchell weren't my absolute closest friends, I would have never let them convince me to do this.

When I reached the school, no one was there yet. I heard crickets in the distance and it was almost to dark to see with just my eyes and no light. I zipped up my jacket and pulled out my phone. No news from Mitchell. Cody was on his way. I'll be standing out here alone for a few minutes then.  That's when I heard footsteps. They sounded very close. Too close to be exact. Thinking it was some sort of adult that will question me, I hide in the school's greenhouse. It's so humid and gross in here,I thought. I walked deeper into the greenhouse and looked through the translucent walls. I saw someone. It was a girl's silhouette, so it was definitely not one of my friends. I squinted to try and see some other details. She has a backpack on. That means the likeliness that she's teacher or something is low.

Curious about why a girl was here by herself I emerged from the greenhouse.

"Hey! Who are you?" I questioned.

The girl moved her extremely long ginger hair out of her face and just stared back at me.

"Can you hear me? Why are you here so late?" I pressed on.

"I could ask you the same." She bluntly answered.

I sigh,defeated. I know I shouldn't be here anyways.

"Well I know we both aren't really allowed here at this time. Look I was just curious. I'll tell you my reason if you tell me after."

"Hmm. It's strange that you care about my whereabouts but sure, tell me your story kid."

"I'm waiting here for my friends. They wanted me to join them when they explore the school tonight. They should be here soon."

The girl walked up to me.

"I know how to get in without leaving any evidence." She smiles.

"Um, sure that'd be great if you wanna tell me. But once again, why are you here all by yourself?"

"I always hang out here." She calmly states.

"Why?"

"I don't have friends to keep up with, so I hang around here during my down-time."

"Well alright then. By the way my name's Lawrence."

"I am Maeve."

"Nice..."

Cody and Mitchell both come running up to us shortly after our awkward conversation.

"Who's the girl?" Cody pants.

"This is Maeve, a new friend of mine. Apparently she's gonna show us how to get in without a trace."

"Why is some chick out here just because?" Mitchell questions, suspicious.

"She said she just hangs around here..."

"Ah whatever, lets go in this joint already." Cody impatiently urges.

Maeve points to the basement windows and gestures us to follow her.

I watch her as her slender and somewhat tall figure races towards the windows. I watch her hair, which is obviously past her hips, sway with each step. I wonder how her hair doesn't get in her way.

She kneels by the window, which is covered in rusty fence material. She pulls out an old screwdriver and carefully screws the cover off. She turns to us and smiles, the moonlight resting on her face. Her black makeup pops out on her pale face. The black lips were easy to see, along with her super dark and shadowy eye make makeup  around those grey-blue orbs that made her look like she's never slept a day in her life.

"I wasn't planning on having people join me tonight, but I have a few cool things I can show you." She giggles.

I sat in my bedroom thinking about the night's events. Tonight was really eventful. Maeve was very funny and very crafty when searching through the school's things. She wasn't very sweet to my friends but seemed to lighten up when speaking to me. One strange thing though...she looked at me strange the whole time and when we left, she asked if I could come back again. Alone.
