"I don't know how to thank you," She said, and I looked at her. "Be my friend," I said, and she smiled at me. "Of course I can be your friend," She said and hugged me. I froze, feeling the contact of another girl. The same age like me to.

The rest of the school day went by quick. I grew to know Beverly, and I even told her some secrets. She understood why she could not tell them to anyone, even if we ended our friendship.

We walked out of the school, seeing many kids that rushed home. "I do not want to go home yet," She sighed. She had an abusive father. "You can come with me home, but I have to keep watch over my little brother. Is that okay?" I asked, and she nodded. She smiled at me. I do not think I have ever seen a girl that happy. "Are you not going to tell your father?" I asked, but she shook her head. "I am a big girl now, I can come home to my friend when I want to," She said, and I patted her on the back.

I have not told her about my little brother, but she knows about my mom. Well, only that she is dead. "My father will be home, but he does not say much," I informed her and she nodded. I think she wishes that her father did not talk much either. We walked along the sidewalk. Other children kept a good distance behind us, seeing that I was beside her. "You have to get used to people ignoring you, since you are hanging out with me," I informed her, but she did not seem to care.

"Hey, you saved me from bullies, that's the least I can do," She said to me. Beverly was a nice girl, and she could do anything you told her too. Even if it seemed impossible, she could try it. "How many siblings do you have?" She asked me, looking straight ahead. "I only have one little brother. My dad stopped dating since mom died," I informed her, not taking my eyes from the pavement that we walked on. "You are pretty strong;" She said, now looking at me. I stared right back at her, looking her dead in the eye. "How?" I asked, and she laughed. "You stick up for others, even complete strangers," She said, and I rolled my eyes. "You were being bullied, only if someone could stick up for me like that," I sighed.
