~ 3 ~
Despite the cold autumn night, all they felt was warmth. Hesitance danced in their eyes as they gazed upon each other in a way they never had before. Jay's eyes flickered from Grace's eyes to her lips, examining every inch of her face in a new light.
The wind whistled the trees and crickets hummed a rhythmic song as they sat in this position. Jay's untamed curls moved with the current of the breeze as his honey-colored eyes stared into her own dark orbs.
She held her breath as she gazed down at him. She was unsure of the feelings she felt in that moment, unsure of the electrical current surging in the air around them.
A sharp, cold wind came out of nowhere, promptly removing the spell. She quickly removed herself from him, her cheeks tinged pink.
"Sorry.", she apologized with embarrassment as she stood up and dusted the grass off of her jeans.
"Either you're just that clumsy, or you attacked me on purpose to get revenge on me for making fun of you.", he joked laughingly, getting to his feet.
And just like that, the tension evaporated.
Grace rolled her eyes at her best friend, shaking her head as she began walking away.
But as she listened to Jay still chuckling behind her, a giddy smile broke out on her lips. The warmth of their closeness was not something she would ever forget.
It didn't take long for them to reach the fair. They bought tickets at the ticket booth and wasted no time on sprinting toward the carnival rides.
First, they went on the Ring of Fire. The entire time she was screaming while Jay laughed at her. They walked off of the ride with Jay still teasing her.
"Every year we go on the same rides but you never change."
"The rides don't get any less scary.", she protested.
As they walked amidst the crowds of people, she suddenly halted in her steps. Jay nearly stumbled into her back as she stopped to gaze at the Ferris wheel in the distance.
In the darkness, it's neon lights shone colorful and bright. But something about it seemed different this time... This time, she was nervous. Not because of the ferries wheel itself- but because she would be riding it with Jay.
"What are you- Oh.", Jay seemed to follow the direction of her gaze, "Do you want to go on the Ferris wheel next? It's our tradition."
Grace took a moment before nodding hesitantly.
"The ferris wheel it is." Jay smiled broadly before grabbing her hand. His mere touch set her skin on fire as he dragged her across the fairgrounds.
