"Sold out all over the country!"
"They're taking over the world!"
"Such inspirational music!"
"They're okay."
"They need to stay in their line of music."
"I love Phase 4!"
"Alright girls. Are all your mics working?" Jinyoung paces around nervously behind stage. The girls laugh, "Check." They say in unison. He nods, smiling nervously. The lights dim and they take their cue, moving to the center of the stage. They all get in position, Taeri in front.
"If I mess up, buy me a taco." Hwamin whispers before their mics get turned on. Nehwa giggles, "That's not a very good punishment for messing up."
"Guys. Remember why we're here." Taeri shuts them up.
Why we're here.
(To the past)
Four girls enrolled for a music program at their local high school. Four out of four hundred girls. Only a few will be taken in and sent to a company to, hopefully debut. So the four girls sat in the empty detention classroom. Since their family couldn't pay as much as the other students, they were put in the lower classes that got held in the detention room. The teacher didn't even both showing up so they sat there doing nothing. One day, their teacher did finally decide to show up with cleaning rags and buckets of water. An hour into the silent cleaning Nehwa speaks up, "So how did you guys get here?" Taeri is the only person that answers.
"Well..."
Taeri skips down the hall towards the dance studio. She smiles swinging her bag on her shoulder. She opens the door to find a session already going. She checks the times list to see that it was her turn."Excuse me?" She asks. They ignore her until the music stops.
"Can we help you?" One girl snaps.
"Well, I just checked the schedule for reservations and it's my turn." She says politely. They snicker before going to get their bags. One hangs behind as the others exit.
"You'll need all the practice you can get." She smiles. Taeri can usually take a simple insult, but not when it comes to her dancing.
"When I break your arm, you'll need all the medical help you can get." Taeri smiles before running and jumping onto her back.
"So, how did you guys get here?" Taeri asks.
"Well, I vaguely remember fighting someone for a pudding cup." Hyesoo raises her hand.
"Why is the prefect Hwamin here?" Nehwa raises an eyebrow at Hwamin, who's stayed quiet the entire time. Hwamin glares at her, "Why are you here?" She scoffs. "I'll say my story first and then you tell yours." Nehwa makes a deal. She nods in reply. "It all started when..."
Nehwa casually walks down the crowded hallway. She doesn't mind the few people that bump her. She enters her classroom and sets all her books down in an organized order. A boy in her class begins bothering her as she tries to quietly take notes. He pesters and pokes her relentlessly. She ignores him and stays the good student she is, until he picks up a strand of her hair. She pushes his hand away, "Please don't do that." She turns back around and continues writing. He smirks and continues messing with her hair. She warns him to stop a few more times before she finally starts to get annoyed. "I told you to stop." She growls. He shrugs with a simple sorry.
"Nehwa! Please save your conversations for later!" The teacher scolds. Nehwa turns back around and picks her pencil back up, she almost breaks it in the process. She manages to hold out until the last ten minutes of class when he starts messing with her hair. She turns around and gives him a good punch. He holds his nose, "Why the hell did you do that?!" He yells.
"Nehwa! I'll see you in detention!"
"You're turn." Nehwa looks at Hwamin. She sighs, "It wasn't my fault."
Hwamin stuffs her hands in her pockets as she walks towards the music room. She sucks on the sweet, blue, lollipop. A hand stops her in her tracks. She gets blocked in with arms on either side.
"Where are you heading to?" Jaewon, her classmate and friend, asks. They were always a bit more friendlier with each other.
"I have piano lessons." She simple states, ducking under his arm and continues walking.
"Why not hang out with me for a while?" He follows after her.
"Because I have to practice Islamey for my solo competition." She stops at the door.
"You've had that song perfected since you were twelve. Come hang out with me and my friends for a bit, please?" He stands in front of the door with his arms crosses. She rolls her eyes, smiling. Which is a rare site for the school prefect and mast pianist.
"Jaewon. You can watch me practice if you want." She reaches behind him and turns the door nob. He moves out of the way, "Just fifteen minutes?" He compromises. She shakes her head, "Yeah whatever. Fifteen minutes and I'm gone."
"Turns out they were doing drugs and I happen to get caught." Hwamin says flatly. They all stare at her surprised.
"How are you not suspended?" Taeri asks. Hwamin snorts, "The school would suspend one of their highest scoring students, the prefect, and most of the trophies this school owns are thanks to me." She says cockily. Oh what Taeri would do to punch her. Nehwa pulls the rag off an electric guitar and picks it up, she pulls the strap over her head, "Hey guys, check this out." She strums a loud note.
"That sounds good." Hyesoo nods. She taps a rhythm on the desk. Nehwa continues pulling the cloth off to reveal more instruments. "Would our Hwamin like to give the keyboard a try?" Nehwa turns the keyboard on.
"No. I'm good." She shakes her head. Nehwa raises an eyebrow.
"I get it. You don't wanna embarrass yourself. That's cool." Taeri stands up and inspects the microphone. Hwamin throws daggers at her with her eyes, "Excuse me? I bet I could master any solo on the keyboard easily." She slams her hands on the desk. "Then prove it." Taeri instigates. Hwamin stands up and walks over to the keyboard. She plays a quick skit from Chopin Étude 4.no in C sharp minor. She looks back up at Taeri, "Wanna keep talking?" Hwamin snaps. "Just because you can play doesn't mean you have the talent. What are you even gonna do? You can't pay bills by showing off." Taeri crosses her arms.
"You two, stop being salty." Hyesoo sits at the drum set. The two ignore her and start arguing all of a sudden.
"You're so obsessed!" Hwamin screams.
"You think you're so great because your families rich!" Taeri pushes her back.
"It doesn't even matter that my families rich! At least I have talent!"
"Screw your talent! Playing the piano doesn't mean you have talent!"
"Dancing doesn't mean you have talent!"
"You can't even do anything for yourself!"
"SHUT UP!" Nehwa screams. Everyone stops and looks at her. "You guys need to stop arguing! Get over yourselves!" She yells.
"Whatever, Ms. Second place." Hwamin taunts knowing it would piss her off. Nehwa is about to punch her until Hyesoo speaks up, "Guys. Let's just be nice. If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything." She stands between them. Hwamin rolls her eyes, "I'm out of here." She grabs her bag and walks towards the door.
"Yah! You're not allowed to leave until an hour from now!" Taeri yells.
"I can do whatever I want." She opens the door.
"Just because you're favored doesn't mean you can do whatever you want!" Taeri yells as Hwamin slams the door behind her. Nehwa sighs and opens the door following after her without a word.
