Prologue

Ive got to get away. My heart was racing a mile a minute, my lungs burned making each breath harder than the last. The muscles in my legs were getting tight and I knew there was no way I would outrun them. Their unified whistles were ringing in my ears. They knew I had nowhere to go from there. I was young, sheltered, and had little to no chance of survival. On top of that, I had chosen to run away in the middle of the night which was not wise. It was pitch black and seeing wasn't option; I had to feel my way through the trees and pray I wouldnt trip anywhere.

I had to stop. I scurried behind a giant boulder, listening carefully for any sign of them-- or worse, the dead. I peeked out from behind the rock, seeing their faces by the light of the moon.

"Let's just give up, man." I heard a deep voice rumble. After a long pause, I heard a heavy chuckle and a loud whistle indicating that they turn around.

I let out a breath of relief and waited until i was sure that they were far enough for me to keep going. My safest bet was to climb up a tree and stay there for the night and that's what I did.

Climbing up the tree in the dark left me with a gnarly cut on the palm of my hand, but I'd deal with that later. For now, my focus was on staying out of sight until daylight broke through.
