"Are you kidding me, Eleanor? Why do you listen to this..stuff?!" Her mom asked her older sister, Eleanor that hot summer afternoon as they were at a stop light and she had changed the radio to the local rock station and Green Day was blaring through the car.
Eleanor sighed and more than likely rolled her eyes at their mum and then answered her.
"Because it's awesome and its going to be legendary one day, plus, it's better than the old pop music you listen to" she answered.
"Yeah mum, your music is kind of outdated" She defended her older sister quickly. She had always admired Eleanor and loved her taste in music. Their mother on the other hand, wasn't. She always preferred 1960s and 1970s pop music and was very strict about what music they could play in the house and the car.
Their mum then sighed and gave up the fight, for now anyways.
Once they got to the house that evening , Eleanor went straight to her room and took off her makeup and got on her laptop. While she read her books that were given for homework. When she was done she checked her old, outdated, Nokia phone. As soon as she pulled it out she saw a few texts from her classmates who hated her. How they got her number, she didn't know, all she knew was that they texted her everyday pestering her about how she looked and how she was the youngest in their year and wasn't smart enough to be in it. She just ignored them, but it still got to her as she wanted to be cool.
She sighed as she quickly finished up her homework and headed to bed to go to sleep.
She woke up in the middle of the night as she was thirsty, She groaned as she looked at the alarm clock on her nightstand and she then quickly got out of bed and then was heading out the door to go downstairs, but then she stopped as she heard some bumping around from her sister's room. Being the curious person she was, she quickly walked out of her room and next door to her sister's room.
As soon as she got to her room, she saw Eleanor about to sneak out the window. She quickly gasped and ran over to her.
"Eleanor, what the heck are you doing?!" she asked frantically as she tried to grab her sister's arm to keep her from going.
Her sister jerked her arm out of her grip though and gave her a brief glare before she answered.
"What do you think I'm doing?! I'm going out!" she said bitterly.
Rhiannon then paused and sighed.
"Where are you going this time?" she asked sadly.
Her sister's face then softened as she looked at her and then she quietly got up and walked over to her.
"Rhi, I am 18 now and I think its about time I leave, Now since mom can't stop me I am going to-"
"You are leaving, for good?" She asked as it finally clicked in her mind.
Eleanor sighed and nodded.
"But look, I won't be gone and besides, Someday, you will be leaving and you will be cool" She said firmly as she put an emphasis on the word "you",
Then it was quiet for a moment as her sister hugged and kissed her.
"Happy birthday, Eleanor" she whispered after they pulled away from the hug.
"Look under your bed, I put some cool stuff under there earlier today, So just think of me when you open it, yeah?"
She nodded. "okay"
She did check under her bed that night and she was glad she did as her sister had left her proud CD collection for her and her CD player as well. She then never heard much from Eleanor after that, only the occasional phone call, text or Facebook message. Her mom was bitter about the situation but soon realized that she couldn't have stooped her.
But boy, did she soon realize her sister's words to her that night were correct.
