when you asked me for my heart

I gave it unwillingly, unknowingly

mouths fumbling/ fingers stumbling over/ eyes engulfing

each other

there was an inferno billowing out of me

and I said, don't ever leave me/don't ever abandon me

you whispered into my hair

never, never

hands tangled in the threads of my body

we etched our stories into constellations/ seared it into the heavens

and you whispered into my neck

forever, for always

I was alive then

under skies dripping with stars/blooded with our promises

I felt so alive then

But when you asked for my heart

such a terror, such a horror clawed up my lungs

That I felt the sky fall and the stars burn out

and I remembered your words

never, never/forever, for always

I was never truly alive then
