Introduction:

I slowly took in a deep breath filling my lungs with the fresh autumn air, leaving a cooling sensation throughout my body. I let out a sigh and began gazing at the horizon, watching the sun slowly disappear into the darkness of the night sky, leaving only a glimpse of its light that sporadically appeared throughout the lake.  As we sat at the edge of the dock; I dipped the tip of my toe into the chilled water, retrieving after only a few seconds due to the intense freezing sensation that began to ripple through me.  A slow trail of goose bumps began traveling up the edge of my body, leaving me with a burst of the shivers.

Drew looked down at me, with his welcoming smile than pulled my body closer to his, wrapping his long arms around my chilled body. I took in his soothing aroma as his touch began overtaking me, bringing along with it instantaneously relief from the coldness. I took in a deep breath, feeling the stress flow from my body as the air left my lungs. I could never understand how a single touch could cause me to feel so many emotions. But with Drew there was no question, his touch had a power over me.

The reality is when you have been through the struggles we have had to deal with these previous months; it changes you, the way you feel.  Anyone would feel strongly connected to the person who saved their life. I tried to steer my thoughts away from my past, by distracting myself with the peaceful beauty of my surroundings. The lake was calm, with a few ripples from the falling leaves slowly landing on the lakes surface.  The Leaves of the large Oak tree’s dangled over the soon to be frozen lake; each leaf with its own radiant color, looking as if they could burst at any moment seems to memorize me.  My imagination always seemed to get the best of me; as a child I use to believe that the leaves changed colors in the fall because they were so full of secrets that needed to float away and release them into the air. It’s a nice thought though, a way for everybody to be able to release their secrets. I recently learned that keeping things in can do a lot more damage than letting them out.

I looked behind me to see if my father was still awake. In the far distance I could see the shadow of my house, dark as night, with the exception of the back porch light flickering in the background. He must have passed out hours ago. It’s been a long hard day, a little harder than I think any of us were prepared to handle. The trains of thoughts about today are hard to process as well, but that’s why Drew and I are out here anyways. We came out here to talk but the problem is neither of us knows where to begin.  I know I really scared Drew today, but I’m stronger now. I want to tell him this but I can’t seem to muster up the confidence to let the words come out. So instead we sit here in silence, Drew’s stare fixated on the view of the lake that rested in front of him.

A chill breeze began to fill the evening air, stirring the leaves and causing a dancing wave of chills to align alongside my back. I wrapped my arms around Drew’s body to entrap the heat between us. After a few seconds the wind seemed to slowly disappear leaving the night in absolute silence. Drew looked down at me with his smile, as he slowly brushed a sliver of my hair away and gently loosened a vibrant red leave that had got entrapped in the strand. He smiled and released it into the air, instantly I began to imagine it as a memory from my past and just like that, it takes me back to the very first moment when everything started.
