As soon as the bell rang for lunch Shayden bolted out of the detention room. Finally! She turned the corner and was pleasantly surprised when she ran into James. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her to his locker. When they got into the empty hallway he brushed her hair out of her face and rested his hand on her cheek. "Shay, why didn't you tell me you had a boyfriend?" He asked disappointedly.
"Oh my gosh, I don't!" She exasperated. He smiled at her.
"Good," he said before he pulled her to him and kissed her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, noticing her heart was racing she tried to create space between them, but all that did was cause him to push her against the locker. When he finally pulled away she realized that she hadn't been breathing. She gasped for breath as she reached for her inhaler, which wasn't in her pocket. She shoved her hair out of her face before spinning away from James and hurrying to the detention classroom. When she got to the door she found Johnny, who was holding her inhaler. She snatched it from his hands and stuck it in her mouth. After she was done she looked at him.
"How'd you know I needed this?" She questioned him.
"Shayden Jones, it's kind of obvious when he's pushing you against my locker," he said, causing her to blush, "I walked towards my locker to go get something just as he pulled away, you were breathing so heavily that I figured you may need Phill," he informed her.
"How'd you know that?"
"Know what?" He questioned.
"That I had asthma, and that I named my inhaler Phill?"
"You and I were on the same track team and you had an asthma attack," he informed her, "I remember because it scared me so bad, and all you were doing was saying 'Get Phill' and no one knew what that meant," he told her as he placed his hand on her shoulder.
"James doesn't even know I have asthma," she told him as she shook her head, "anyways thanks, and sorry," she apologized.
"It's fine, but just know the next time you make out with someone against my locker you better have your asthma inhaler," he informed her casually.
"Why?" she asked curiously she said folding her arms over her chest.
"Obviously you don't remember when we snuck to the back of the track bus and made out while everyone was asleep," he said, his signature smirk returning. Her cheeks turned bright red.
"I didn't think you'd remember that," she admitted, wondering if he was playing with her feelings.
"You know the funny thing? I've kissed many girls in my day, but if you asked me their names the only one I could name I could think of is yours."
"Why is that?" she asked, wanting to know why she was the only one he remembered.
"Because you're the best kisser I've in countered in my day," he said before walking past her and down the hall.
"Why is that?!" She yelled down the hall.
"You'll find out in time Shayden Jacklynn," he replied. Her breath caught in her throat, she had doubted the story when he told her, but the only one she'd ever told her middle name was Kenny Lukas. It was then that she realized that Kenny, aka Kenneth, had never revealed his first name to her. She crashed against the door when the realization hit her. The reason she his eyes looked familiar is that he was Kenny.
Kenny was her boyfriend for eleven months from the end of eighth grade to the beginning of freshman year, the best eleven months of her life. She remembered that was the one time her mom and dad got along, but it all came crashing down when her dad lost his job and they had o move.
Not only did her dad lose his job, but her mom had to quit her extremely high paying job so that they could move. Although it was beneficial to her dad, it wasn't to her mom. They started getting into fights when there wasn't very much money being added to their bank account. The reason was that her mom was in a pretty high position at her old job, but where she hadn't gone to college there is no way she could get that high of a job anywhere else. At that point, their happy marriage went down the drain, and they hadn't gotten along since. Sometimes Shayden wondered when her parents would get a divorce. Although she knew how serious of a thing it was, she thought that it would be better for the whole family if her mom and dad split, or at least went to counseling.
The bell rang, signifying that it was time to go back to class. Shayden shook her head before walking into the detention room. She walked to her seat and sat down, wondering what crazy thing was about to go down in her life. She laid her head on her desk and closed her eyes. This was going to be a long week.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Shayden yawned as she sat up. Her vision was slightly foggy as she looked around, trying to figure out where she was. "Good morning, Shayden Jones," she heard. She turned her head and saw Johnny. Detention, she was in detention.
"What time is it?" she asked as she wiped the sleep out of her eyes.
"It's only 2:15," he informed her. She looked over at him and noticed that he was giving her an odd look.
"What do you want, Johnny?" she asked in a slightly annoyed voice.
"Well, your eye looks kinda bruised, are you okay?" he asked. Her eyes went wide as she covered her left eye. Crap... He saw her black eye.
"It's nothing!" she announced.
"Okay, but I never asked what it was, I know what it is. I mean, come on Shayden Jones, I've been in my fair share of fights. The only thing I can't figure out is why you have one. I can't figure out who would give you a black eye," he commented as he stood up and walked to her desk. He leaned towards her after he propped his elbows on her desk. She gulped, knowing that she wouldn't be able to lie about her niece hitting her. "How'd it happen?"
"My niece," she said quickly.
"Nice," he said as he nodded. He looked at it closely, "Shayden, how old is your niece?"
"She's three."
"It's funny that you say that, mostly because a three-year-old hit me in the face last week. However, it didn't bruise my face. How long have you had it?" he asked.
"For about 4 days," she replied before realizing what she was saying.
"The funny thing is that mine went away after a day. It honestly kind looks like some guy punched you. I'm also assuming that it's worse without the makeup on," he pointed out. Shayden's breath caught in her throat. How'd he know?
