Chapter 3:

Irvin had gotten over his previous anger and came to stand by me again. I thought about apologizing, but I'd done nothing wrong. The stares people continued to give me were uncomfortable, and I didn't enjoy them. Irvin didn't seem to either because he stood over me in a protective stance. I noticed the cloaked figure move closer to me. Something wasn't right. I moved closer to Irvin, who noticed the figure immediately. A sudden feral frown took place on his lips, and it just made his face look that much more frightening. I was standing so close to him that I felt his chest rumble. I looked up at him. What was that? It almost felt like a growl. But, that couldn't be. Humans don't growl. I turned to look at him again. The menacing look in his eyes, stopped me from saying anything. I could feel the boat begin to hit shallow water. We were almost to Widow's Peak. My home. Or, my father's home. Irvin's home. As far as I knew, I'd never been here. My mother gave birth to me in Oregon, gave me to Janine in Oregon, and left me in Oregon. Widow's Peak didn't even bring back a small hint of nostalgia. I leaned against the railing to gaze straight ahead at the small island. The large shadow of a house was the first thing I saw. It was huge, standing tall against the line of the hills behind it. I wondered who lived there. Irvin followed my gaze and let out a small chuckle. "That's Roux Hall. It's your home now, Valerie," he whispered to me. I whipped around to gape at him. That impossibly large house, was my own? No. I'd wake up back in Janine's home in a minute. None of this was actually happening. It was just an extremely vivid dream. Of course, that was just me trying to hold my fears. Well, my fears did nothing for me later on. My fears, in fact, only brought the danger closer to me. Because unknowingly and unwillingly, I was a target. A target far worse than the unknown future.
