7:15 pm
I'm casually doing what I usually do before school starts back: reading.
For most, it's a tedious way to pass the time, but for me, it opens a gateway to a world I never knew existed full of imagination, hope, freedom, and love—no negative emotions, just positivity.
Wow, that must've sounded really geeky. Oh well. How cares? They're my thoughts anyway.
Speaking of my thoughts, they were rudely interrupted by a flying pillow thrown by my devilish sister.
"Ughhh!!! What the hell Lauryn?!!"
"Come on, Kayla! It's movie night and dinners almost ready."
I sigh at my slightly older sister. "Alright, I'll be down in a sec. Just let me finish this, okay?" I say while playfully rolling my eyes at her. We may look alike but that's as far as our similarities go.
Lauryn leans against my doorframe and groans, showing her obvious annoyance with me. Is it normal to see sisters that are not always annoyed with each other? I just brush off her attitude and try to continue reading. "Do you have to read all the time?"
"Just like how you're always sketching new designs in your journal," I giggle as she rolls her eyes playfully.
"Whatever, just hurry up. We have a guest coming over." By guest, she means Cameron.
Wait, pause for just a sec. A little background: I'm Kayla Pierce, and The girl I was arguing with is my older sister Lauryn.
After tomorrow I'll be starting my first day of 11th grade at you guessed it... well, probably not... it's Hillcrest Academy. Meanwhile, Lauryn is attending as a senior with her newly found "summer romance": AKA her boyfriend. Too extra?? My apologies! Let me start over.
Cameron Daverson: he moved to Lansing almost two years ago; Cameron lives about a block away from our house. The story of how they met is pretty simple, maybe even a little cliche. A few days after he moved into the neighborhood, he started going jogging and that's how he ran into my sis. It seemed like right after they met there was an instant click like they had been friends their entire lives, but they wanted to get to know each other before taking the next step.
That's not necessarily a bad thing; I mean, I would want to date someone I trust and know that they would be loyal and treat me like a queen. But it's almost 2023; can you really find a guy that genuinely cares about you and is sexy as hell?!! I honestly don't know anymore, but I shouldn't focus on guys; they're just a distraction anyway.
But back on topic, Cam is pretty cool. I'm genuinely happy that they both found someone that understands them and that is not just after appearances.
Anyways once I hear the doorbell, I close my book, fix my glasses and hair, close my bedroom door, and head downstairs for dinner.

"For some, fairytales are a way to escape the pressure and harsh truth of reality, but over time they become stronger, more intense until you can't tell the difference between what's real and purely a dream."
About an hour after the movie, Daniella FaceTimed me to get my opinion on an assignment for school. Daniella Miller: I've known her since the 1st grade and we've been best friends ever since. At her school, she's an honors student like me and in the top ten percent of her class. She's even captain of her soccer team and might I add that girl kick ass at her games. There's no way I could even attempt to do what she does every day. I'm positive I would combust if I tried to balance her schedule or even if tried to play one game of soccer. I'm seriously not good at sports and I'm honestly okay with that.
How is it possible that she has an assignment before school even starts? Daniella actually goes to Sherwood High it's about twenty minutes away from Hillcrest but for Dani, it's much closer to her house. Sherwood is a part of Lansing's Municipal School District so they start a week earlier than Hillcrest.
"Ooo alright. I like that. Thanks for helping me bounce around ideas. I'm totally going to ace this paper for psychology. I just wish she didn't assign it solely cause over half of the class wasn't paying attention," Daniella says rolling her eyes.
It was Dani's teacher's brilliant idea to assign an essay on how people cope with reality, and she's making it a test grade. Now, what teacher assigns shit like that and makes it due the next day? A very petty teacher that was pissy and in her feelings cause most of the class was asleep. But I mean honestly, who can blame them.
If you're like me, unpopular, shy, and classified as a nerd cause you make straight A's and is ranked in the top percentage of your class, you might find this somewhat interesting.
"Damn, your teacher is that petty?!"
"You have no idea. Be glad you go to Hillcrest starting tomorrow. The only two things that are keeping me here are the guys and the location," Dani says.
Did I mention that Dani can be a little bit boy crazy?..... No?...My bad.
"Wow, I would think that even my best friend would love to go to school with me, especially since there are so many fine ass guys, way better than the ones at Sherwood, and they would love to flex for you in our co-ed P.E. classes," I say, trying to tempt her.
"Girl, don't even try it," she said, rolling her eyes playfully.
I shrug my shoulders, "I'm just saying, girl, you missing out."
"Mhmm. How would you even know? You don't actually start going there until tomorrow. Plus when is it like you to talk about guys?" she smirked and crossed her arms.
Welp, she caught my ass. "Alright, alright, you know me all too well, best friend, but for real though, I really wish you transferred over here. It would be so much better with you here."
"I know, girl, maybe someday." She sighed.
"Speaking of fine guys..."
I cut her off. "Girl, do not finish that question!" I say, laughing. "You already know Cam and Lauryn aren't breaking up. Quit messing around."
"I'm just checking in; you never know what the future may hold," she said, smirking.
Okay, I know that was directed towards me. I roll my eyes, "You know I'm not looking for a boyfriend. I'm just trying to graduate so I can go to college for free."
"Yea, I know, girl, I respect that: an all-powerful independent woman trying to make her mark on the world, we need the world to recognize greatness. But I want you to let loose and have fun for once too."
"Oh please. I know how to have fun."
She gives me a look and I know that she's right; the only time I have fun is when she's around and with my sister, sometimes. She's my closest friend; one of the only people that really understand me.
I look at the time: 11:38 pm. "Girl, I gotta go. I need to get to sleep."
"Okay, just text me tomorrow. Goodnight." I grab my blue iPhone 12 and end the FaceTime.
The time now: 11:40 pm. I talked to this girl for almost two hours. She's my best friend, and honestly, I think of her as family, so it's not hard to believe.
I put away my laptop and notebook and turn out my lights, but the fairy lights hanging over my bed have a dim light setting, making it barely possible to see, creating the perfect aesthetic. Then, I slowly drift to sleep, hoping my first day of junior year won't be as crazy as I think.
