Chapter Two

By the time Ruby left my house, it was half past eleven. Realizing I was craving it, I decided to go for a late-night Taco Bell run. I grabbed my purse, left a note for my parents, and begun walking.

When I got there, the line wasn't long at all. I waited until the guy in front of me was done. I ordered a chicken quesadilla with sour cream in it. I got my food and sat at a booth in the corner. As I ate, I looked at my phone, when I noticed someone sit down across from me. I looked up. Sam.

He smiled a little, in a shy way.

"Didn't expect to see you here," he said.

"Yeah, well," I said between chewing. "You shouldn't expect a lot of things."

"True."

I waited for him to say something else. But he didn't. He just sat there, staring at me intensely with those strange eyes of his. They looked brown, blue, and green all at the same time.

Snapping out of my thoughts, I realized a few minutes had passed without either of us saying anything. I didn't mind though. It was kind of nice. But I decided to break the silence.

"My name is Grace, by the way."

Sam smiled. "That's a pretty name."

I blushed a little. He was so cute. And his name. Sam. It was a nice name.

After that, we talked for a long time. From our favorite movie to band to anything and everything. I even found out that he likes to sing and play the guitar.

By midnight, I had finished my food and we were heading out the door.

Sam stopped once we got outside and said, "Would you like to go somewhere?"

"Where to?" I asked.

"Anywhere," he said.

"But haven't you heard of that old saying? Nothing good happens after midnight?"

He started walking in front of me, but backwards, so that he was faced towards me.

"Ah, but that's where they're wrong, Grace." he said. "Good things always happen after midnight."

************

We walked to the park on the east side of Jackson. We were walking close to each other, but not too close. Street-lamps lit up the path as we made our way to the wooden bench. We sat down, just sitting there in silence.

He looked up at the sky and smiled a crooked smile. "What?" I asked. He shook his head.

"The stars,"

"What about them?" I asked.

"They're beautiful. Have you ever wondered how they could be so beautiful? And calming?"

"I guess," I said, not sure where he was going with it.

"I don't know," he said. "I just think it's crazy how beautiful things can be sometimes. Like the stars, and sunrises... And you."

I smiled. I wasn't sure how I felt about him yet. "Thanks," I said.

We decided to head back home. He brought his car, thankfully, so he took me home. As we pulled into my driveway, he took the key out of the ignition and sat back, relaxing.

Again, it was quiet.

"Can you sing for me?" I asked, my voice just above a whisper.

He smiled, and begun.

"So open your eyes and see

The way our horizons meet

And all of the lights will lead

Into the night with me

And I know these scars will bleed

But both of our hearts believe

All of these stars will guide us home"

It was beautiful. Flawless, even.

"Wow," I said. "you're really good."

He blushed. "Thanks."

"I had fun tonight." I said.

"Me too. Hopefully I can see you tomorrow?" he asked.

Instead of talking, I nodded and wrote my number down on his hand real quick.

"Goodnight, Grace."

I told him goodnight and walked inside. I couldn't help but think that this boy would mean a lot to me.
