The setting of this story is in the Alaskan wilderness during the gold rush which took place in 1899. They are already in Alaska when the story begins. This is where a father and his two sons find that as long as they trust and love each other, they will survive. The main characters are James the father, Dave youngest son, and Danny oldest son.
Dear journal, it is Monday I think but, the date is unknown. We have not kept track of it. Why? Our days are filled with cutting wood and panning in the nearby stream. It's winter here which means the sun never goes below the horizon. Most days we wake up early spending the day working until late into the evening. Dave has had a great time so far but, yesterday he ran into a bee's nest. The largest gold nugget we found fits into a quarter of my palm but, most of the gold we have found has been like dust or very small nuggets. Oh, I hear dad calling to me got to go and work for more gold, bye.
