The next day Rosy and I started for town with a half a pound of gold to pay for the wedding. The wedding is in three days and, we had to get everything ready so nothing was missing. After we were done the shopping we visited with her father and mother. After a while, we left to go back to the cabin. We do not have to return to town until the wedding date. We got back to the cabin and did not see Dave anywhere at all. We rode back to town and went to her house to get her father and mother and some others to help us find Dave. We showed everyone the way to the cabin. When we got there our plan was to spread up and down the stream to search for him. Three hours later I heard someone yell out "I found him!"
"Did you find him" I yelled back.
"Yes come quickly please" Rosy's father yelled back.
I ran in the direction that his voice was in. When I got there he was standing over Dave and trying to get him to wake up but he could not. I got down and tried to wake Dave up as well but I could not. There was blood all around him. Scratch marks across his chest. I tried over and over and nothing seemed to work. Finally, his eyes opened! When I saw that his eyes were open I told Dave that we were going to have to move him to another spot closer to the cabin. He nodded his head and fainted. I asked if anyone would help me carry him then Rosy said that we should build a stretcher to carry him on. We built the stretcher for him and carried him to the cabin. After we had set him down on one of the beds in the cabin Rosy's father got some men to go after the bear. Rosy's mother said she would help take care of him. I made a hot meal for all of us to eat. Just after we were done eating we heard the bed creak and we all looked over to see Dave trying to get up. I got up from the chair and went over and told him to lie back down.
"No I do not want to lie back down," he said.
"Fine just do not stand up please," I said.
"Oh ok I won't stand up," he said.
Rosy came over and asked if she could check his bandages. He said she could check them. Her mother came over and told us that the band had killed the bear and had gotten two bear teeth. One of them was for Dave and the other one was for me. Dave said he wanted to tell us what happened to him.
"I was walking down the side of the stream when I came upon some bear tracks. I thought if I could find the bear I could kill it so while I searched I panned for gold. While I panned for gold once the bear had moved downstream from me. So when I started back to the cabin I surprised the bear and the bear clawed me across the chest. Next thing I knew I was here." said Dave
"We got you here and then some of the men went after the bear and killed it," I said
I turned towards Rosy and her mother and told Dave he would not be here without them. I then gave him the bear tooth that I was to give him. We all got food and had supper and Dave retold his story to the band of men that killed the bear. Tomorrow I think I will build a barn. But That is another story.
