When Piper first heard about Annabeth's boyfriend, it hadn't been at the greatest moments. With her movements agitated and eyes crazed, Annabeth screamed and cursed to the sky after realizing it was only them, a small group, beaten up and foreign.
At camp, Piper found about the mystery man. Percy Jackson. The young man who everyone at the camp loved, but rarely talked about. Piper figured their silence had to do more with Annabeth than everyone else.
One evening Leo had asked someone about him while at the pavilion. As soon as he mentioned the name, everyone turned dead silent. When Piper glanced at Annabeth, she was rigid. Quickly, Annabeth got up, throwing her leftovers into the fire, "For Hera," she muttered before walking away. One of her siblings stood to go after her, but another older one grabbed her and shook his head. His forehead was creased as he gazed at his younger sister. Piper didn't even have to guess how people were looking at Leo.
"These are the big three's cabins. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades." Zeus' cabin was pure white with a statue to the side. It seemed to radiate power. Hades' cabin was pure black in an elegant, but deadly way. Lastly, Poseidon's cabin. It was stunning with intricate carving of the ocean and sea life on the trim. The smell of sea salt seemed to grow as they drew closer to it. Will was leading them on the last of the tour around the camp. Piper glanced at Zeus and Hades cabin's. Empty. But Poseidon's, it seemed as if someone lived there. "Who stays in that one," Piper questioned as she rose her finger to point at the cabin exuding the sea.
"Percy. He disappeared a little while ago. Now the only person who goes in there is Annabeth, his girlfriend." Piper thought back to the crazy blonde girl earlier. Once they finished walking around, the group headed back to the Big House. Stepping inside, Piper glanced at the photos framed on the wall. All different types of images were hung. Photos of tournaments, camp fires, and wars decorated the wall. One photo stood out to her though. Moving closer, she stared at the photo of a boy and girl. The black haired guy had his arm thrown a girl, that girl. The blonde one. They were laughing. The guy's sea green eyes looked like Poseidon's (or at least how Piper imagined it to be) and the girl, she looked happy. Piper stared at them a minute longer before finally turning away. Her thoughts returned to them later that night. The girl looked so different now. Her clothes were wrinkled, eyes glazed, and most of all, she was broken. Broken because Percy was gone. "Wherever you are, please come back soon," Piper whispered in the dark. She didn't know why she did it, but she knew that she wanted them to be like that again. Carefree. In love.
Over her time on the journey, Piper learned a little more information about Percy. His cousin was Thalia which also meant he was also Jason's, which came as a surprise to many. He was a son of Poseidon who killed a Minotaur right before reaching camp. He had been dating Annabeth for a couple months, but they had been friends for a long time. And he was loved by everyone.
"Coach?" Hedge looked up at Piper when she softly called his name. Leo stirred the tofu in the skillet while Jason sat on a log, flipping his coin.
"Did you know Percy?"
There was silence. Hedge nodded. He looked at her, studying her as if trying to find the reason for her question. Piper couldn't help but feel anxious due to his unnatural behavior, the coach was always loud.
"He had an empathy link with satyr named Grover. He was respectful."
Jason, Piper, and Leo listened as he spoke.
"The boy better come back before the other one ends up killing herself from worry," he gruffly said before clearing his throat. Piper knew this was all she'd be able to get out of him. When Leo said the tacos were ready, she nodded, letting the previous conversation slip from her mind.
After the journey, she grew closer to Annabeth. When the group confirmed with Chiron what was occurring, Piper felt some of Annabeth's stress lessen. It was still there, but it simmered instead of boiling like before. The most interesting knowledge she got about the young man was actually from Annabeth herself, which would have surprised Piper before the journey.
Annabeth told her stories about him. Many. Like how he drooled when she first met him, more like take care of him (something she got used to over years). Percy confessed to her that when he met Aphrodite while she was missing, for a split second the goddess looked like Annabeth. When Percy confessed this, she smiled and gave him a peck. His eyes were furrowed as he looked at her in confusion. When Annabeth explained why this occurred, he turned a deep red color. Annabeth told about their first date which was in Paris, how they both held the sky, fighting Kronos, Percy's confusion about her and Rachael's rivalry before becoming friends, or how he was unorganized, lacking in manners, and wasn't too smart.
Piper sat next to Annabeth on the edge of of basketball court.
"How are you and Jason," Annabeth asked. Piper glanced up, surprised from the question.
"I think he has a girlfriend back home," Piper softly said. The other girl glanced at her and when she did, tears started to gather in Piper's eyes. I shouldn't cry, Piper angrily thought to herself. A tear fell. And then the rest flooded down. She thought of dance on the roof together and their first kiss afterwards. Or how he wrapped his arms around her waist when they rode on Argus. But most of her memories with him were fake, nonexistent. A touch of warmth drew her back to reality. Arms wrapped around her and a smell of lemon and salt encased her. Opening her eyes, blonde curls blocked her line of vision.
"I don't think he has a girlfriend."
Piper glanced up stunned at the blonde as Annabeth drew back.
"Why?"
"The look on Jason's face. His expressions are a lot like Thalia's. If he had a girlfriend, he would have a look that showed he had a girlfriend when he looked at you. Regret, pain, betrayal for being with you even if it was fake, but I don't see it. Of course I don't know the truth, but you should ask him. He's gotten his memories back by now. You should ask him for the truth. You deserve it."
A smile slowly appeared on Piper's face, not only because of Annabeth's statement but because her actions. She knew this was only a part of who Annabeth was when Percy was still here. And she couldn't wait til the man came back so she could see it.
"Thank you." Annabeth looked at her and smiled.
A couple nights later, Piper had been walking when a flash of blonde ran towards her. A weight slammed into her. Startled, she looked up to see Annabeth and felt her arms around her. Tears ran down her face. Her expression was different. It had joy.
"I talked to him in my dream. He knew me," the girl said before sobbing. Piper knew this was Annabeth's greatest underlying fear. That Percy would forget and find another woman. Piper smiled as she drew the girl closer.
"The night before he vanished-," Annabeth gasped, "Percy told me he loved me." Piper's eyes widened. "I was so happy. For the first time, I seriously thought I could live a normal life. But when I woke up, I was only reminded the idea was impossible. I looked everywhere for him. His apartment, cabin, all over camp and New York. He was gone. And I was so scared because for the first time, Percy was taken away from me. I never experienced it before." Tears continued to stream from the girl's eyes.
"He is my rock. Percy helped me see who Luke truly was when I didn't want to. He included me even when he was speaking with Rachael, but he didn't understand why I hated her. He told me I could become the greatest Architect in the world and how he'd cheer me on at my side. He was there through everything." Piper didn't know about Luke, but whoever he was, Annabeth had cared for him greatly.
"We will get you back to him," Piper promised her. Or she would die trying to.
"Ready to set sail," Leo called from the top of the Argo II. Before climbing on top, Piper glanced at the place she had so little time to call home. This journey, she wasn't sure if she'd survive. Never know if she would be able to make it back. Piper looked at all the campers; Clarisse, Travis and Conner, Katie, Will, and even Drew. She'd miss them. Lastly, she glanced at Chiron who stood talking with Annabeth. The girl gave him a hug before turning to the ship. Looking at Piper, she nodded before yelling, "Set sail!" Annabeth grabbed the ladder and climbed up behind Piper. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a flash of blonde pass her. Jason was flying to the deck.
"Are you ready for this," Piper called down to Annabeth.
When she heard the reply, "Never been better," Piper smiled and saw the fire that arose in the other girl's eyes. "When the Romans meet her, I want to see what will happen," Piper thought to herself because Annabeth was back, raging as ever against those who'd stand in her way to the man with sea green eyes.
The ship flew the water which looked crystal blue. The sky was a pale pink and soft golden hues sprayed around the bright orange sun. Annabeth stood on the deck gazing at the ocean. Her hair waved in the breeze as she leaned closer to the edge. The other three gazed at her as they are their meal. Annabeth's remained halfway eaten on the table.
"I want to have a love like that," Piper thought. When she noticed the Jason become rigid and Leo glance at her, she realized she had spoke.
"When Percy lost his memory, he still remembered her. And she searched everywhere for him. When she disappeared, he tried to throw himself off the cliff to save her. Percy held up the sky in order to let her be saved. Annabeth took a poisonous knife for Percy. They are and always will be the greatest love story of Olympus," she whispered.
Jason looked uncomfortable. Maybe it was because they had just started dating and here she was spouting her wishes for their relationship. Leo looked sad as he glanced at Annabeth, who continued to stare at the feature that reminded her of her boyfriend.
"I see the Roman camp," Leo shouted from the top of the deck. The others ran up from below to see the camp. The entire legion stood in order, waiting for their arrival. Annabeth ran to the edge of the ship her eyes frantically moving as she searched for someone.
"Uh guys? There is like this big statue blocking our way in." All the other looked down to where Leo was pointing. Sure enough, there was a huge, not to mention angry, statue. His voice bellowed at them.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU CANNOT BRING THIS MONSTROSITY INSIDE THE BORDERS!" Annabeth's eyes narrowed when she heard the statue's statement.
"Can't we hover the ship above?"
"Er-yes. Only if you leave your weapons all on deck. I shall personally check all of you."
"Fine." The others gaped at Annabeth as she grabbed the dagger she always fought with and dropped it to the ground. Bending down, she stuck her hand in her left shoe and pulled a small dagger out. Lastly, she undid her belt which was actually a whip.
"Let's go." The others quickly followed suit before climbing down the ladder to the ground. The statue rechecked them for any weapons. Once he decided they were safe(which took forever), he allowed them in. The architecture and layout of the camp was stunning. The sky was light blue and columns decorated the buildings. The only thing disrupting the image was the hundreds of Romans who stared at them. When Piper looked at them, she saw apprehension in all of their eyes. Some half bloods were adults and others were young, only four or five. From the Romans, a group of people appeared and marched to the front. As soon as she saw the girl, she felt Jason stiffen beside her. Pipe grabbed his hand. She couldn't help, but feel self conscious when the girl stared at their linked hands. This was Reyna. Right beside Reyna was a man. A man familiar to Piper from an image. Percy. She heard Annabeth suck in a breathe. Power radiated from him. He stood clothed in a towel like thing, wrapped around his tan skin, like the others. A toga, if she remembered correctly. His hair was dark, so dark it looked black. The most mesmerizing part were his eyes. Sea green like ocean. Those eyes were currently staring intensely at something. Or more specifically, someone.
Reyna started speaking, but her words were soon forgotten. Percy and Annabeth surged together at the same time, their moments fast as the slammed into one another. Their arms winded around one another as they embraced. Cupping Annabeth's cheek, Percy kissed her. Their hands clutched one another desperately, afraid the other would vanish if they'd let go. All the sudden, Annabeth grabbed Percy's arm and threw him over her shoulder. He fell and so did she, but he caught her and drew her to his chest. Tears streamed down her face as Annabeth spoke. She spoke loud, but only loud enough that Piper (and the Romans too) leaned forward to catch her words.
"If you ever leave me again, I swear to all the gods-" Percy laughed. "I missed you too," Piper heard him say. And then Annabeth smiled. A real one. One that showed one's greatest joy. As she helped Percy get up, she wrapped her arm around him. Piper tightened her grip on Jason's hand. Percy kissed her head before speaking. And as Piper looked at them, noticing the way Percy's thumb rubbed on her hand clasped to his, she knew why Percy was so special. It wasn't because he was a son of the big three, even thought it was pretty special. Percy was the other half to Annabeth. And that was the only way it could be.
