Melinda smirked as she drew her last card. Adrenaline pumped through her veins as one thought passed through her mind; this duel was done. She looked up at her opponent; his eyes were glaring on her. He had done his best, Melinda knew that, and in all honesty he had been a slight challenge for her, but only a slight.
”Well?! Are you going to do anything or just stand there all day?!” He yelled at her. His eyes shone with confidence, he believed that this duel was his that there was no way his opponent could pull something out of their ass and win. Patience reaching there breaking point he turned to antagonizing the young girl in front of him, if only she would admit defeat he could claim his trophy and prize money.
Melinda allowed a small smile to grace her face; she remained calm as she met his eyes once more.
“I just thought that you might wish to enjoy what ever is left of our duel. I have no doubt that you played your best, however I’m afraid that victory is mine tonight” she stated. Her opponent looked surprised for thirty seconds, before rage took over. He once again started yelling, but Melinda was no longer listening. She laid down her winning card and watched as her opponents anger was slowly consumed by utter fear. Before he was allowed another chance to speak Melinda finished the duel.

Melinda left the arena with her small trophy in her hands, another tournament done and over with for the season. Truthfully though, Melinda was growing tired of the tournaments here in California; where she now lived. More than anything she wanted to return to Japan, and play in the tournaments there. Over the last 8 years she had traveled to Japan a total of two times to play in the tournaments. Secretly her heart had desired to bump into a certain blue-eyed boy; but to her dismay she had not seen him. The tournaments there were always the best, but they were not her only reason for visiting the beautiful country. A small sigh escaped her lips as Melinda realized she was once again thinking about her favorite boy. ‘Seto Kaiba, I wonder what you’re doing right now’.
”Ms. Rose? Are you alright?” A voice interrupted her thoughts. Started, and slightly embarrassed, she looked up to see her chauffeur holding her limo door open, which he must have been patiently doing the whole time she was lost in thought. Quickly composing herself she gave him a small smile and got into the car, unable to trust her voice. Leaning her head back she closed her eyes and allowed her thoughts to drift back. She was 19 now, almost an adult ready to face the word head on, no longer relying on her parents, although, Melinda didn’t feel like much of an adult.
A high school graduate, she wasn’t in college, and didn’t have a job, much to her fathers annoyance. What was the point of a job when Mommy and Daddy paid for almost everything though? On top of all of that she had put everything she ever won from her tournaments into a savings account at the bank. She had a rather large amount saved up, but no clue what to do with it. Her parents owned Rose Corporation, a business that suddenly took of 8 years ago, forcing them to move here to California. Their business makes military communication devices, so basically nothing that Melinda wants to waste her time on. And while she knew it was rather pathetic of her not to get a job, she didn’t see the need to when her parents give her a hundred dollar allowance each week, and pay for everything that she needed. Not to say Melinda hadn’t tried to get a job. She tried waitressing for a little while, but soon learned that she couldn’t stand working with food service. After that she tried working at an elderly home, but found the elderly completely insufferable. Melinda sighed; she knew her life was going nowhere. Its not like she could continue to live at home, letting her parents baby her. If only she could move back to Japan, certainly she could find where she fit in there.
Suddenly a wild thought slipped into her mind. Her eyes flew open and she almost cursed herself for not thinking of it sooner. Her tournament winnings, what’s to stop her from using them to move back to Japan? Certainly she had enough saved up for the move and an apartment for her? She almost cried from how happy the though made her. All she had to do however was convince her parents of course to allow her to move by herself. That was going to prove to be a little more difficult than it sounded. But honestly how long did they expect her to live under their roof?
”Ms. Rose? We’re home now,” The same voice broke into her thoughts. Melinda felt her face flush and she looked over to meet the concerned face of her driver. Mumbling an apology she got out of the car and headed into her house. She wasted no time and headed straight for her fathers study and knocked on his door. A moment paused and she heard her fathers voice telling her to enter. Melinda opened the door and looked inside the office. Adam Rose was seated at his desk, his wife Amelia to his left; both of them were looking over some papers spread across his desk. Her mother looked up and immediately smiled and got up to hug her daughter.
”Oh Melinda! How was your tournament dear?” She asked. Melinda gave her mother a smile back and hugged her even tighter.
”It went well. My opponent gave me a run for my money but I managed to pull through” she answered. Before she pulled away she inhaled her mothers perfume, she always wore the best perfume. Pulling from her mothers tight embrace Melinda stood up straight and tried to look strong and serious. She had to convince her parents that this was what was right for her that her future wasn’t here in California.
”I’m glad that you’re both here. There’s something we need to discuss”.
