in te kuiti, new zealand,
a mirror is smashed
because the girl
looking into it
cannot
or perhaps refuses
to see what
she is told
is there. in los angeles, america
a boy of fifteen
paints his flesh
with lines of red
because he cannot
force himself
to be
what he knows
he is not. in tokyo,
japan, a young
woman starves
herself
so she can be
beautiful.
and hollow.
all over the world
the critics of society
that make up society reach
out and hold
their own hands
behind their backs
and pretend it is
someone who cares.
