aflame

you remind me of city lights
and driving in the middle of the night all the way until the sun comes out from under the dark pavement to give us morning
being with you every day of the week
and month
and year
because its ok to spend forever with someone who lifts you above the madness of humanity and brings you to a safer and brighter place
you exhale the scent of lilacs
your tears sparkle like the sun on the snow
you have hair the colour of chocolates and your heart is my own to hold because you gave it to me all those months ago
sent it in a brown box with a red bow
it wasn't marked as fragile but i remain careful

you remind me of above
the blue abyss where birds roam free and happy and unaware of the pain under them
our storms are forming in the air and they only affect the things below but its not their fault
there are constellations on your skin that you didn't see until i drew them on and its okay because i'll always be here to show you the galaxies intertwined with your own veins
until the last star burns out
until the sun implodes
until our world is nothing but a forgotten speck in the timeline of the universe i will be here

you remind me of home
a big idea in a small word
others will search for their entire life looking for the place that is familiar and safe to them
they will move across towns and countries looking for the house
looking for the city
not knowing home can be a person too
home is wherever i am warm in your arms no matter our surroundings and no matter the situation we're in

you are the last rose in my garden and i will never cut you because you are sweet and red and have shown me how to live my life contentedly when all i ever wanted was sunflowers
you are the song on the radio every sunday night when the weekend has ended and i'm dreading the morning after yet the familiar chords of a piano in the air are fixing the pain i feel inside and turning it into a sad sense of longing
you are the sand between my toes i'm still shaking out of my shoes two days after the beach visit
you are the flight of the pigeon so unaware of the war beneath
you are the fever i can't seem to get rid of
you are the first snow of december

maybe my mind is lying to me but i don't need to know the truth unless it means our love can set flame to the world below and leave us alone to watch the smoke cloud over our heads in the shape of a heart

together
we are more than people
we are more than an idea
we are more than stars
we are the whole universe
waiting to show everyone how a small flame can burn into something so much lovelier than a simple flicker of a candle on a table

even though i'm burning up
i've never felt safer
we are aflame
and i won't let go
until i'm a pile of ashes
and even then

mine will mix with yours
and our spirits will soar
across the seas and the stars
and rest together forever
as though we never burnt out
in the first place
