Marisol

I was walking down to the printers, acting like I was working. I finished all the work Mr Lawson had written down for me.  He wouldn't be able to do half the things he does each day, without me.

He needed a secretary like me, he did own the biggest company franchise in New York; Lawson Ventures. Well actually his father did. He just had to wait for him to retire I guess. But I never see his father here, just him.

I rarely talk to him though. We only made small talk when we deliver work to one another.

As I was saying, I finished all my work, and was excited for my date tonight. I found him on this dating site my best friend Lyanna had introduced me to. His name was Romani, he was 26 years old and a very attractive African American man.

Not like I cared what race they were, but I usually dated men of color. Not a choice I ever made, but those were usually the men attracted to me. In school, with my body being more mature than others: "slim waist, thick cakes" is what they called me, I've just never had any other experience.

I had light olive skin, curly hair that I never straightened unless of special occasions.

My mom was Latina, and my dad was mixed with black and white, making me 50 percent Latina, 25 percent black, and 25 percent white.

"Hold on a second, Ms Blythe!" I turned in my heels surprised of the rather familiar name calling out to me and not someone more "important".

Mr Lawson was wearing a designer suit, as always, and looked like he'd been searching for me.

"Yes?" I ask, with a straight face, containing my nervousness of this man. Being his secretary, I've seen him let a lot of people go, he was rather intimidating.

"I need to discuss something with you."

"Okay." I reply, pretty sure I'm dead.

"Why don't we go to the Lower East conference room?" He suggests, "It's empty."

He doesn't even give me a chance to answer. He starts walking, so I hesitantly trail behind his distractingly muscular body.

We walk through this long hallway, go down two floors, then we stop at this big locked door. I've never even been down here.

He shuffles through his pocket and pulls out a red card. He scans it under a box, and the door opens.

"Why don't I have one of those?" I've seen many other people with them, and always felt so excluded when I had to ask someone to use theirs to open a door that I couldn't on my own.

He simply explains, "You never have meetings, and these cards are given to LM's only. For right now Ms Blythe, your my handy secretary."

Without room for objections, he motioned for me to sit in one of the chairs, while he sat at the head one at the end of the table. Not used to being at these large tables, I sink into the one closest to him.

"As you should know, Martin Design Company are wanting to invest in our business." His tone was getting serious. This was important to him.

"Well, my father is being very strict about getting things together throughout the building," he paused like he was trying to thoroughly word something, "We need to be ready, they are coming for a pop-up inspection sometime this week, so we don't know when."

I just kept nodding like a fool, I have no idea where this is headed.

"So, me and my father have decided that all of our employees, including you, have to look very presentable." He paused then just kept rambling, "We've already spoke to most the staff that needed this nudge, they agreed they'd buy some new things."

"Are you being serious, you want me to change our whole style to work? What if I don't want to change?" I barked, I don't usually speak to Mr Lawson like this, but I just find it in the slightest offensive. Not all girls were taught to dress like Stephanie Moore; (the top of all the LM's, and Henry Lawson's secretary) skin tight dresses, stilettos, pounds of makeup.

He simply pulled out another card, obviously amused by my reaction.

"That's why I'm giving you this, you're the only one in faculty that's receiving one so... keep it on the low."

"Geez, honored." I remarked sarcastically.

He just rolled his eyes like I was a child, "I've already linked it to your account, there's no limit so don't worry, but you're not permitted to spend it on things outside of making your looks boost up the company.

Wow, a black card... with no limits? I'm sure this is every 24 year olds dreams, "I don't think it'll make a difference on the way people look at us, but if you insist..."

"You could shop right after you clock out, we'll have a driver take you to the locations." He suggested.

The date with Romani.

"Oh my," I'm honestly overwhelmed with his rare generosity, "Mr Lawson, I actually have a date tonight." I'm actually really bummed out, but I can't stay single forever and Romani seems like a really nice guy.

Mr Lawson stood up like he just got an excellent idea, "If you're done with the work I've assigned you, I guess I could just drive you and we could go right now."

It's now or never, Marí.

I nod, "Alright let me get my purse and coat."
