Chapter 3
"Where are we?" I ask.
We all step out of the van. Ink handcuffs me.
"Safety precautions," she says.
I nod.
She stands behind me to lead me in the right direction.
"I got it," Adam says. He gently grabs my hands. I
blush.
"Okay," Ink says.
Rubble and abandoned buildings surround us. There isn't a soul around.
I struggle to remember why I'm hear and realization hits. I wrench my
hands out of Adam's grip.
"What do you want from me!"
"I told you she would do this," Adam says.
"Shut up, Adam," Ink snaps. "I got this under control."
"Sure you do," Adam says.
Ink takes a step towards me. "It's okay, we are hear to help you."
"You're insurgents! You are killers! What the hell do you want with me?"
"We prefer the term anarchist."
I raise my eyebrows, "Anarchist, really?"
"Yep," she pipes. "Now if you could just corporate-"
"No!" I say.
I step on Adam's foot and spin around. I hear a bullet click in place and I
freeze.
"Adam, put the gun away. I had this," Ink says.
"Ink, let me handle this," Adam says.
"Just let him handle it, Ink," Theo says. He scratches his eyebrow.
"Whatever, I'm heading back to Anarch," she says. "You asked for it
Adam. You take care of her. Theo, your coming with me."
"Okay," he says. "Sorry man."
Adam nods.
They both turn to go and sprint off in the opposite direction.
I slowly turn to face Adam. "Your not going to let me go, are you?
He shakes his head. I look for a way out.
"Ahhhh!! Help me," I scream. "Help!" I crumble to the ground. Please let
this work.
He rushes over. "What?"
"Un handcuff me!"
He hesitates.
"Are you serious? My side!"
"Let me look."
"No! Un handcuff me!" I kick and scream in pain.
He struggles to unlock the handcuffs.
I scream harder and force tears out of my eyes. "It hurts."
"Hold still!"
The key clicks in place, and my hands are free.
I jump to my feet and run. I sprint back towards the habitable part of the
city, using the tip of Tower as my guide. Night is falling fast, and I can hardly see where I'm going. Adrenaline courses through my veins. At least the plan worked. I glance back and see him close behind. Mistake number one. I trip on a pothole and drop to the ground. I scrape my bear hands on the gravel. I wince. I quickly stand back up and continue running. I need to lose him. I take a random turn down a dark alley. Mistake number two. It is a dead end. I run my fingers up the wall and look for a way out. I turn around defeated gasping for breath. A silhouette appears at the entrance of the alley. "Shoot," I mutter. Adam approaches me. I can hardly make out his face in the dark.
