Prologue

(This is a memory of Levi and Eren in their past lives. It will rarely come in with the main story.)

"You little shit, just say something. Let me help. Please . . . Just tell me what you're thinking."

"Levi heichou . . . It's been an honor to serve the survey corps." A long pause. "Perhaps this life I've lived in was really too short but in this lifetime of misfortune, I met you Levi." Eren disregarded heichou, and very rarely did they call each other by their names. Levi hearing those words from Eren's mouth clutched the bars of his cell tighter. Eren formed a small smile and his teal eyes glistened for the last time. However, these eyes that Levi longed for no longer resembled carats; for they now resembled tears.

"Don't say that you brat." Levi's words almost resembled a cry, Eren too anxious, no, too afraid to look at Levi's face; he kept his head down. Levi's hands slid down the bars in a helpless motion. A cadet from the survey corps walked in nonchalantly, hand pressed to his chest.

"Sir, it's time."

Levi nodded in acknowledgement and glanced back at Eren one more time before he was taken out of the cell, yet the whole time, his head was still down. Levi walked out to the execution arena where men, women, and children gathered to witness the last of the titans die; a significant achievement when humanity could finally be freed from meaningless death. Devotion to humanity, Levi thought. What a load of bullshit.

Humanity's strongest lifted his blade up high. The ants cheered.

"Today, humanity shall be freed of titans. May the end of this treachery build a new future," Levi said bitterly at the cheering humans urging for the death of his Eren. The sun glistened the reflection of the blade held high while Eren's head remained low, but Levi saw a small smile form at the corner of his eyes.

Eren's eyes closed and Eren wished that Levi would not feel the burden of his death.

The blade swung at full force and the head of a young boy who fought for humanity rolled off his body; a gory scene cheered on by the ants below. Levi's face darkened yet emptiness engulfed his anguish, not sadness. He delicately picked up Eren's head with both hands and subtly caressed it with a white handkerchief. His teal eyes were no longer there for Levi to admire, and at that moment, Levi realized he was never humanity's strongest.
