I ran through the golden field toward the tall stone brick meal hall. For the first time in two weeks, they were allowing the field workers to eat. After the "incident" I was surprised they even let us live.
"Meridion" Grandpa Espérer called, "Slow down before we have another incident."
"...right, sorry.." I replied. I walked beside Gramps, waiting for him to say something rude about our owners and how the women should be taming the cotton and making clothing, not working the fields. He always complained about that on the way to lunch, but I guess the incident made him stop. We walked up to the meal house, all they were passing out was bread and water. Great, disgusting dry plain bread and tasteless water. Woohoo! I read the meal sign:
either bread or water, no both.
Gee, great. Now I have to contemplate whether to have food or drink, wonderful.
*a few minutes later, in the meal line*
"Go in front of me Gramps, you need food," I said gently pushing Espérer in front of me.
"Thank you Meridion, that's very kind of you."
"ALL RIGHT OLD MAN!" The meal worker screamed at gramps as if he expected gramps to be nearly deaf. "TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT TO EAT!!" I realized the worker was taunting Espérer, that a**butt. I waited for gramps to order, trying to come up with a way to subtly burn the guy for insulting Espérer like that. "Boy, EY, BOY!" The worker screamed at me, looking P.O.
