We both wore our best outfits, her hair up, my hair down and we were set to go. The theatre was rather large and we got to our spot and waited for the main act. We were surprisingly close to the stage and when Queen finally came on, I recognized them instantly from pictures on record sleeves. The flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury of course, the curly haired guitarist with the nice smile, Brian.....nope can't think of his name. Then there's the bass player, something Deacon, hey- maybe I am a bigger fan than I thought!? ...Maybe not. Oh! And there's the drummer, Rog- wait a minute! Is that- no it can't be- it is! I know that face. The drummer of Queen is the man who came up to us the other day in the park! You have got to be kidding...of course! I recognize him from pictures!!! I couldn't help thinking how and why but who cares, I found my mystery man! I know his name is...Roger...? And that's about it. I try to get a better look as the machine fog gets in the way. Then I try to get Gabriella's attention over the loud rock song they started playing.
"Gabriella! Gabi! DUDE!" I scream over the loud music and cheers.
"What?!"
"The drummer- that's him! I swear to you that's the guy in the park!"
"Oh my god you're full of it, just enjoy the damn concert!"
"Gabriella, look! Take a good look."
She looked with a serious thinking face, which then broke a bit and turned to shock. "Holy shit Meg, you're right!"
"Of course I am!" She shot me a look. I smiled back and turned my gaze back to the band, who was coming close to the end of the opening song- I think I recognize it...Ogre Battle...? Sounds about right. All of a sudden there's a part with a high pitched scream, and everyone's gaze followed to my drumme- oops did I say my drummer? I meant *the* drummer ...heheh...
I always knew that voice on the records, but I honestly didn't know who it was. I knew it was either Freddie Mercury or Brian what's-his-name but I didn't think it would be any other...interesting. Gabi and I looked at each other in amazement, then the song ended and we cheered and whistled.
"Thank you darlings!" Freddie Mercury exclaimed in a very posh accent. "This next song was written by Brian May over here-" May! That's his name! How could I forget? "And it's entitled White Queen." Then a slow and soft guitar sequence began. We smiled as Freddie's sweet voice chimed in.
"So sad, her eyes. Smiling dark eyes. So sad, her eyes. As it began..."
Then as the drums kicked in a spotlight shined on Roger the mystery man and it was...beautiful. The drums went on a smooth, relaxed rhythm and our eyes locked. His face went from pure shock to a hesitant smile and he kept staring into my eyes until he noticed he had messed up his part and was now not only being stared at by the crowd, but by the rest of the band. The music had stopped and it was silent. After Roger snapped out of it he started a rather awkward drum solo and nodded at the band to continue the improv. We all had a great laugh and the rest of the show went smooth and amazing.
After that encounter with the mystery man, Gabriella and I laughed and cheered and screamed through the whole rest of the concert, and quickly went back to our hotel without too much trouble. I felt a ping of sadness knowing that I couldn't see Roger at all after the show but I got over it pretty quick from being so tired. I also remembered that I was the main cause of the unexpected mess up and Roger's great attempt to cover it...We had a good chuckle after that and I think Gabriella really understood what I was talking about now.
After tonight, I can now say I am a sufficient Queen fan, and I only want more!
