Chapter 5: Party Crashers
Friday, 21st April 2010
I couldn't believe the term had gone so quickly! A month ago I'd woken up in my bed, dreading the fact that I had to get up and go to a new school. But now, I had friends, Mikayla and Quil, Embry and Seth, who was becoming a closer friend due to me speaking to him and trying to get him and Mikayla together. Even though I didn’t know either of them very well, if you spent five minutes talking to either one of them you’d know that they were meant to be –they were like the exact same person.
“So, you coming to Peterson’s tonight?” Quil asked. Apparently, at the end of every term, Nathan Peterson threw this massive party at his house while his parents were out of town. This tradition had been going on since freshman year. Everyone was invited, even the geeks and nerds and, of course, the cheerleaders and jocks. Nathan Peterson being a jock.
“Of course I am, as if I’m spending a Friday night by myself again.” I smiled then turned to Mikki, “You comin’ Mikki?”
“Nah, I got a family thing. Plus parties aren’t really my scene.” She shrugged, “You have fun though.”
“We’ll miss you there. I’ll catch you up on the shit that goes down when I get home, promise.” I hugged before heading into my last class of the day –history with Mr. Wood.
Mr. Wood was a young teacher, only about thirty, with dark blonde hair and this annoying hippie-style beard and clothing style. He was a good teacher but he liked the sound of his own voice so much that he explained everything and then gave us the assignments for homework and barely got any class time to complete them. I guess that was better, it meant we had more discussion time on historical events and dates.
History was one of my favourite classes and at the moment we were studying the English monarchy. In particular, Henry VIII, his many wives and how he changed an entire nation from Catholicism to Protestant (The Church of England) just because he wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon.
“Alright class, I know in less than an hour you’ll be on term holidays and want nothing to do with school but I have an assignment for you. You need to write up a research report on any English Monarch –excluding Henry VIII. Please choose someone that you don’t think anyone else will do because I really do not feel like reading through twenty five reports on Elizabeth II.” Mr. Wood handed out a sheet of things we needed to include in our research report –things like their date of birth, their full name, when they took the throne, their date of death, did they abdicate the throne, ect.
A guy in the back row, I thought his name was Russell, asked, “What does abdicate mean?”
Mr. Wood sighed, “Can anyone else answer that question?”
I rolled my eyes and replied, “Abdicate means to relinquish the throne. So basically, if, say, Queen Elizabeth II thought she was too old to rule any further, she would give up the throne and the power that comes with it and then Charles –her son- would get the throne.”
“Thank God someone was listening in class. Thank you, Ms. Wilde.” He smiled gratefully at me while a couple of people in class swiveled in their seats and gave me strange looks. I shrugged, opened my notebook and started drafting my report while Mr. Wood went over some things we learned towards the start of the term which some people may have forgotten.
The bell rang at 3.25pm exactly and the entire class literally sprinted from the class room while I was still sat in my desk.
“Mia, you know you can leave.” Mr. Wood said from behind his desk. I looked up,
