Alexander stood at the window in one of his rooms at the inn, looking grimly into the night as he felt a familiar presence entering through the doors. He didn't have to turn to know who it was.
"My Lord." The man acknowledged.
"Did you search the house?"
"Yes, my Lord. But nothing out of the ordinary was found. Nothing to betray that they are not who they pretend to be."
"We both know they are hiding something. This whole town is hiding something, and there is only one thing that comes to mind. I want you to go back there when an opportunity presents itself and search again."
"Yes, my Lord."
"Is there anything you found at all?"
"Herbs. The same herbs are in every household yet I have not found a place where they grow anywhere nearby."
"What are they?"
"I do not know, my Lord. I believed myself to be an expert when it comes to such things as herbs and potions. Yet this-- this I have never came across."
"Find out what they use them for."
"Yes, my Lord. Yet it might be difficult if I do not find the source. Without seeing the plant I can only make assumptions. So far I allow myself to think that those herbs are the key to unlock the mysteries of this town."
"Find a flourist in another town, see if she's willing to provide answers. If not, follow her, see if she too, is hiding anything. Somebody has got to talk. Have you considered this town to be under any curse?"
"I have, and I am positive that this is not the case. The aura of this town is much stronger than that of a cursed place."
"What are you saying?"
"That there is a form of magic evidently pervading the town, but finding the source is proving harder than I anticipated. I am working on it, my Lord. I will inform you as soon as I have a lead."
A short silence fell between the two men.
"Anything else?"
"May I ask how your plan is going, my Lord?"
Alexander turned around to face the man, his mask firmly in place as a sly smirk made it's way onto his face.
"Exellent. I don't know what you did to make her warm up to me, but it worked perfectly. I'm impressed."
"Nothing, my Lord. I didn't have to do anything. I did see her reading a folklore. A werewolf one."
"She knows about werewolves then."
"It would seem so."
Alexander's deep laugh echoed through the room.
"Perfect. She will do just fine to provide us with all the information we need."
"I believe lady Annabelle to be a mystery, my Lord. We should not underestimate her."
Alexander looked the man in the eye.
"I know, she is, afterall, my Mate."
"And she is a beauty."
"Beauty has to do with nothing. It's the eyes that are key to her soul. But you are right, she is indeed beautiful."
"You are a lucky man, my Lord. Yet I do not believe it will be easy to learn much from her."
"I expect that much from her. She will be the greatest challange I have encountered yet and I will enjoy every minute of it."
"The longer we stay the longer we put our country at risk. If people find out you are out of the country, a war will break out."
Alexander was about to answer when his eyes landed on a dark figure walking through the looming streets soaked in darkness. A figure that looked quite familiar...
He grit his teeth and let his breath fall back into normal rhythm before he spoke again.
"That's why I let myself plant another insider."
Alexander didn't turn his focus from the hooded woman following a tall, well built man. Anger gripped his chest. He couldn't see his face but he wanted to rip his head off. Subconsciously, his hand moved to his chest and rubbed the place over the strong, irregular beats.
Darn it.
"My Lord?"
"Good. An alternative plan must be put into motion once Anna failes to give me what I want. Time is limited, we don't have much to spare, as you said so yourself."
His voice was penetrated with a hint of anger and irritation.
"Yes, my Lord. Is anything the matter?"
"No." Alexander turned to the masked man once again, an emotionless mask firmly in place. "What are you still doing here? They are one step ahead of us. If they are werewolves, they know more about us than we first let ourselves believe. They will know we invaded their homes, it won't take long before they come knocking at our doors. I want this town searched left and right, starting again now. I want to know it's secrets by the end of this week. If you don't give me the information I want, you will share their fate and burn with them."
The man was more than used to his master's threatening presence yet still, shivers of discomfort ran through his skin like a knife.
"Yes, my Lord."
"And rid of the fool who was supposed to keep an eye on my Mate. You know I hate mistakes."
Alexander glared at the man meaningfully.
"You know what happens to people who make mistakes."
The man gulped, yet his face stayed motionless.
"I do, my Lord. I'll take care of it."
"Leave. I have matters to attend."
"Yes, my Lord. Goodnight."
Oh, it's going to be good indeed. Alexander thought to himself as he took off his mask and smiled.
She shouldn't have left her chamber at such a late hour. Who knows what danger lurks in the shadows of the night.
His lips stretched into a smirk as his fingers grazed over his lips.
She had no idea.
