::CHAPTER 6::
“Good morning. Take a seat,” the doctor stepped aside for me to pass. I took the usual couch but didn’t lie down. He went to his chair and got out his pen and pad. We stared at each other for a short while before he let out a breath. “Lights off?” he asked.
“This time. Yes,” I nodded. He reached for the switch and the lights dimmed. The lobby’s light peeked through the blinds. Some sessions I let him keep on the light but others, I preferred a darker setting. It was calming and these sessions thrived on me being in a calm state of mind.
“Any new developments since we last met?”
“A few,” I nodded, “I went to see my brother two days ago.”
“Really? What about?” he ask and scribbled into the pad.
“I wanted to talk to him about what happened with my family. To tell him that he and his men would do better than to try to do the same to me.”
“Hmm. And what did he have to say about that?”
“Refused to acknowledge that he killed them, but I expected that. He would never admit to anything aloud. We’ve come to an understanding though.”
“Which is?”
“For now the other person’s life is off limits. We may even go far enough to protect the other. May,” I plucked at a string hanging from my shoe’s stitching.
“Protection of the other. That’s a good step for the both of you.”
“I was reading up on my supposed condition and it said that as a psychiatrist, one shouldn’t tell a patient that you suspect him of being a sociopath.”
“That’s a recommendation for the average human. You’re not the average human. You’ve been alive long enough to handle that sort of thing. Humans live short lives and generally are never mature enough to handle news like that. They use it to manipulate and use people with the ‘I’m a sociopath’ excuse. That way they don’t have to be the one to blame. You’re immortal. You’ve lived enough lifetimes to see wars and turmoil and distress in the world. You’re mentally mature enough to handle the severity of your condition.”
“I see.”
“So we were talking about your trip to see Loki. Anything interesting happened?” he asked.
“Yes. I met a human of his. I’m not sure if she’s the help or what, but I think she might know about Loki’s plans and his new UV Tech.”
“Why do you say that?” he frowned and peered at me.
“She’s mute. He was fine with us talking…until I let it slip that I knew sign language. I think that her lack of speech makes him lax around her. She’s allowed to roam free around the house without anyone guarding her. That’s rare for Loki. He’s the king of security. He even has a guard for his personal blood bank chambers. Kitchen guards.”
“Did you consider that maybe she’s a Pet of his?”
“A Pet?” I laughed, “No. A Pet is a big step for anyone. He already has Leo. I don’t think my brother is the type to go out and claim two humans as Pets. One is stress enough.”
“Fine. So what did you have planned for this Ana girl?” he asked.
“I need to talk to her and get her to trust me. I’m not sure how to do that though.”
“Befriending the girl can work. You never know. You may make a true, genuine friend out of her.”
“I highly doubt that,” I replied, “She’s…sweet. The nice and kindhearted type. Probably the sort of girl they make cartoons out of. You know, the singing to birds and befriending Bambi kind. I’d hurt her if I made the friendship long term.”
