I pull into the driveway and I see the garage door wide open. I park the car and notice my mom hurriedly run passed me and toss two heavy looking bags in the trunk off another car.
"What are you doing? ", I ask and she jumps in fear.
"Brooke, you scared me", she says while breathing a sigh of relief
"Oops I didn't mean to startle you. Why are you putting bags in the trunk, are you going somewhere?"
"No sweetheart, we're going somewhere. I already packed your stuff but you can go upstairs and see if there's anything else you'd like to take, hurry we don't have much time."
"Much time! What do you mean much time? What's going on, Why do you look so scared, Where are we going?"
"Sweetheart you'll just have to trust me, I'll explain it to you later", she says placing her hands firmly on my shoulders.
"Now go upstairs and grab anything you think you need"
I climb up the stairs still confused and a little scared, I grab a duffel bag from my room and look around the room. Signs of my mother packing up my stuff lay all over the place but at the same time I can see where she tried to make it look like no one had been in here.
I take my journals, my laptop, my music box, my jewellery box and makeup bag and then go into my little brother's room and get his I-pad, favorite blanket, some of his toys and favorite stuffed animal. From my parents room I take some of mom's jewellery, picture albums and my Dad's favorite custom watch.
I go downstairs to the kitchen and it looks like a mess, there's a huge butcher's knife sticking out of one of the kitching stools. I walk past the mess to the fridge and get a couple juice boxes, chocolate bars and a large jar of nutella. I also get a tin of cookies from the pantry and a bottle of aspirin from the medicine cabinet and go back down to the garage.
My mom is in the car waiting visibly agitated and looking over her shoulder. Her nervousness freaks me out even more and I cautiously walk towards the car wondering why she's so jittered.
"We'll get Koni from Todd's house" she says as I get in the back seat,
"What about dad, are we picking him up too, should I call him and te-"
"No!", she shouts taking my phone from my hand.
"Do not call your father, don't text him, don't whatsapp him, do not contact your father"
I see the fear on her face as she takes slow measured breaths trying to regain her composure.
"It's okay, everything will be okay, it's all going to turn out fine", she mutters under her breath with her hands placed firmly on the steering wheel.
"Mom you're scaring me"
"I'm so sorry sweetheart I don't mean to scare you, I'll explain everything to you later."
She starts the car and backs out of the garage and I stare at the house wondering if we'll ever come back to it. Not longer after that we get to Todd's house and pick up Koni my nine year old little brother.
"I was going to take the boys to the mall and then drop Koni off back at your house", Todd's mom says
"I know Mandy but there's been a bit of a family emergency and I need to get him early", my mom says putting on her best smile.
"Family emergency?! I hope no one died"
"Oh no nothing like that, It's not nearly that serious, I just need to get Koni early.", mom says trying to act casual.
