Prologue
June 26. The day my parents died right in front of me, four long years ago. We were in a huge car accident and my mother, father, my little brother, Oliver, and myself were all in the car. Oliver had been 9 years old at the time, and I was 14. Luckily, my brother and I both made it out alive, however it was a different story for my parents. They had both gotten severely injured, their condition was critical. The ambulance had gotten to the scene just in time. They were able to take my parents to the hospital, but the doctors couldn't do anything for them and they died in their beds. The doctors allowed my brother and I to see them before they died, but they wouldn't let us go in afterwards.
After their deaths, knowing that the government had been searching for our family for years, I knew that Oliver and I had to get out of there as quickly as possible. Don't ask me why the government was searching for my family, because I could not provide you with that answer. But I knew that I needed to keep my little brother safe; he was the only close family I had left. So, two years later, after much running and hiding, I took him far away to our Aunt's house. We both lived with her for a year, but I soon realized that it was becoming too risky. Our Aunt said that she would protect him and that the government didn't seem concerned with her.
So I did what I had to. I left him with her and began my run. As much as I wanted to, I knew it would be too risky to have two government targets in the same place. I knew our Aunt would take care of Oliver, and all I needed to do, was stay out of the government's reach, which I was able to do for a year after leaving. So my crazy adventure had begun, but who knew how much farther I would get before they caught me. What if they had gotten to Oliver already? Would I even live through all the things the government had in mind for me? My name is Bri. Bri Kinsley. And my crazy life has only just begun.
The Beginning of it All - Chapter 1
My loud, pounding footsteps echo down the tall, narrow alley as I run. The smell is enough to make one sick, but I keep my arms by my sides. It is near midnight, and there is hardly enough lighting to clear a path for me to see clearly. I take a moment to glance over my shoulder. No one there. Good. As I turn my head back around, I let out a gasp. I put my arms out in front of me as I try to skid to a stop, but with my old tennis shoes having no traction against the wet asphalt, I slip and fall backwards. I wince as pain shoots through my arms as I land on them. I try to crawl backwards as the dark figure in front of me slowly steps towards me. Not again...
"It's no use running Brianna. It's too late." The figure says in a deep male voice. I frown and let out a soft growl under my breath. I hate it when people call me by my full name.
"It's Bri, thank you very much." I reply, my voice sounding calm, which slightly surprises me.
The dark figure just ignores me as he steps forward again. I scramble to my feet and stand tall. I am only a few inches shorter than him, pretty good for an 18 year-old girl compared to a full-grown man. I step backwards but after a few strides, I bump up against something. I blink and turn around. Oh no. Another tall, dark figure. However, this one is taller than the other one, towering almost a foot above me.
I can make out a few different features of the man, now that I am fairly close to him. He wears a long black cloak that hangs low near his feet. The hood of the cloak looks like it is far too big for him as it hangs over his eyes. Because of the poor lighting of the alley, I can hardly make out his sharp, pointed nose and pursed lips, which curve into a smirk. He has a pointed chin, recently shaved by what I could see. I take a few steps backwards and turn. The other man had come closer. I am now in the middle, between the two strange cloak-covered people. I start to look around for any escape routes.
