Carmen’s Pov.
Sitting in the school toilet cubicle staring at the positive test, I wondered how I was going to tell my parents about this. I thought back to that night and how this had happened.
It was hot and sweaty with everyone dancing, but no one noticed. Not even Lochie, who noticed everything, as he made his way over to me with two beers. “Hey,” he said, handing me a can and kissing me on the forehead. “Wanna go upstairs?”
“What for?” I asked, pulling at his collar.
“More of this.” He pulled me closer and kissed me. Softly at first, then more intense and with more passion. Taking my hand, he led me up stairs, to the only room that wasn’t occupied by other couples.
That night, we got a little carless in bed, and we had no idea what we were doing. My mum said she was young when she had her first child, Sam, and I hadn’t actually done the math until now. She was in her early twenties when she became a mum, and I’m about to become a mum at seventeen.
Putting the test in its box and then into my bag, I decided it was time to face the music.
Halfway down the road from the school, I ran in to one of my teachers, walking toward me. “Hello, Carmen,” he said politely, nodding.
“Hi, Mr M, I’m really sorry, but I have to keep going. I’m already late and my parents will be getting worried.” I said apologetically, knowing that he would want to talk.
“Not a problem. Will I see you in class tomorrow morning?”
“Yes, see you tomorrow.” I said and kept walking.
Up the street, I saw a couple of guys standing against a tree. I smiled at them. “Hello.” I said politely, walking past them.
“Hey,” one of them said, pushing himself off the tree. “What’s a pretty girl like you doing walking home by yourself?” The tone of his voice sent shivers down my spine and I kept walking. Catching up to me, he put his hand on my shoulder. “Why don’t you let us walk you to your house?”
I smiled at them. “Thank you for the offer, but I don’t let guys I don’t know walk me home.”
As I started walking again, his companion grabbed my elbow. “We insist, the streets are dangerous at night.”
Turning around to face him, I pulled my arm out of his grip, and looked at him, a bit pissed off. “Which is why I would prefer to walk home alone. But again, thank you for the offer.”
“Not a problem.” The first guy said reluctantly, than added under his breath, “But this might be.” Turning around, I saw his fist flying toward me, hitting my in the cheek with such force, then everything went black.
