Marree’s Pov
Five o’clock and Carmen still isn’t home. It’s not like her to be late, unless she’s at a friend’s…but she knows she’s not allowed, not in exam week. She could be at the library…but the library closes at quarter to five and she would have been home now if she were there. She could still be at school…but the school would be locked up by now. This isn’t like her. The sound of the front door opening made me jump. “Carmen, is that you honey?”
“No, it just me.” Henry said, entering the living room. “Why? Where’s Carmen?”
“I don’t know. She isn’t home from school yet and she hasn’t called.”
Placing a hand on my shoulder, he looked me in the eye. “Have you tried calling her?”
Shaking my head, I went over to the phone and dialled her number. The phone didn’t ring. Hanging up, I sat down and began to cry. “Marree,” Henry knelt down beside me. “Did the phone ring?”
“No,” I said through my tears. “It didn’t even go to her voice mail. What could have happened to her? What if she’s hurt?”
Looking as worried as me, Henry stood up. “Have you tried calling any of her friends?”
“She knows not to go over to her friends in exam week.” I said shaking my head, tears streaming down my cheeks.
“Well we should call around anyway. You call Lochie and I’ll call Jan.” fifteen minute later we still hadn’t found her. “Let’s wait until tomorrow; if she isn’t home by five, I’m going to call the police.” He kissed me, wiping the tears away. “I’ll go make us some dinner.”
Watching him leave the room, I began to cry again. I couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to her. What if someone had…kidnapped her? No, that was ridiculous. Why would anyone want to kidnap her? Then I remembered. Just last month, a girl had been kidnapped as she was on her way to school. With that realisation, I cried even harder. “No, no, no. This can’t happen.”
Walking back into the room, Henry knelt beside me and wrapped his arms around me. “Do you want to try Tara, see if she’s there?”
Nodding, I reached for the phone again.

Carmen’s Pov
Waking again in this time was so different than the first time. This room is bright and open, were as the other room was dark and small, and this room smelled of freshly picked flowers, the other room smelled as if something had just died. Sitting up, I gasped, remembering that painful beating.
“Don’t try to sit up.” A woman said, placing a hand on my shoulder and gently pushing me back down. Looking up at her in plain fear, she laughed softly, smiling. “It’s okay, you’re safe here.” Pulling up a seat, she sat next to me. “I’m Amanda.”
“I’m Carmen, and in a lot of pain.”
“Okay, where do you feel the most pain?”
“Mostly in my leg and around my stomach.”
Nodding, she stood over me and pulled the sheet back. “Tell where it hurts.” She said, firmly touching the bruises on my belly. As she came around the far left side of my body, I screamed and pulled away, only causing myself more pain. “Relax; I’m not trying to hurt you.”
“Yeah,” I said in a high pitched voice, raising my eyebrows. “Well that bloody well hurt!”
“I’m sorry.” She said, holding back a laugh.
