Chapter Three

I headed for second period when Isaac met up with me.

"Being a nerd isn't a bad thing Reid, it just means your smart and will get into a good college." He said trying to catch up with me.

I tried walking away but he just caught up. "If you change your mind, the offer is still available." He took out a pen and wrote something on a piece of paper. It was his phone number.

"Reid?" I raised an eyebrow.

Isaac shrugged, "trying it out." He winked.

He handed me the piece of paper and walked away. About five seconds later I went to the trash can and threw it away. As I said, I didn't need help from a nerd.

I walked into my second period which was science and sat in the front row. My teacher specifically assigned that seat for me for the rest of the school year.

If there is one thing I've learned about high school is that everyone turns into someone else. I have. If I was still a freshman I would be sitting in the front row voluntarily. Everyone thought I would be valedictorian because I had everything going for me, grades, sports, the earth friendly club, and the matching band.

I was going to graduate with a perfect 4.0 until I met Lydia.

I was walking downtown at dinner time picking up garbage. She was running away from something, someone and she bumped into me knocking me off my feet. Her face was worried, scared yet excited.

"Oh fuck! I'm so sorry! Are you okay? Are you hurt?" She said while scanning me.

I picked myself up. "I'm fine, thanks." I said.

She smiled showing her white teeth, "What's your name?"

"Camryn." I said, "Yours?"

"Lydia, nice to meet you." She extended her hand and I shook it.

"You too," there was an awkward silence. "Hey are you okay, you look nervous.

Lydia couldn't stay still, I looked down at her shaking hands. She looked unfocused. "What? Oh yeah fine." She said. But I knew she wasn't. No one who is "fine" looks that scared.

"Hey you! Don't move!" Someone yelled. I turned my head back and saw a dark figure heading straight at us.

I turned back to Lydia and she was running away, I didn't know what to do. I just stood there.

"Run Camryn!" Lydia shouted.

I dropped my garbage bag full of trash and ran for my life. I sprinted so hard I caught up with Lydia. We ran for about two miles before we lost the stranger. I stopped out of breath.

"Who the hell." I took a deep breath. "Was that guy?"

"Don't know." She laughed.

I stared at her. "You don't know? Why was he chasing you?"

"I sort of robbed him." She shrugged but was not ashamed.

"And why would you do that?" I demanded.

"Because it's fun!" Lydia grabbed onto my hand and started jumping. She then put her arm around me. "You seem like the type of person who doesn't let loose.

"What are you saying? I let loose." That was a lie. I never had fun. I always followed the rules and do what I was told to do.

She laughed. "We should hang out sometime, I think you'd like my friends."

...

And she was right, I did. And now they're my best friends.

Science ended quickly. I will never forget the day I met Lydia. I will never forget her how much I admired her sense of adventure. I will never forget what she wore. I will never forget the way the light shown on her light brown skin. She was my first real friend.
