Chapter Five
Isaac wasn't anything like my past boyfriends, he was a gentlemen.
My past boyfriends would play and mess with me, mentally and physically. They would take advantage of me, use me.
I had my first tutoring session with Isaac at the library on the second day of spring break. It was fine I guess, a little awkward but he kept trying hard to keep the conversation going.
Isaac was patient with me when I couldn't understand the problem, he was nice. I'm not nice. I don't want to change him. I decided to keep my distance from him, ignoring his calls, texts.
Today was our first day back from spring break and everyone was tan. I however was still the same. People don't usually steal out in the day light and I've been working on my math homework, and I'm almost caught up.
I walked into math almost on time. A minute late that's all. Everyone was surprised that I wasn't late. Except Isaac, he just smiled.
Mrs. Stevens was rambling about our next quiz tomorrow, I tried to pay attention but couldn't, all I could think about was Isaac and how I need to stay away.
I went on my phone and texted Bridget.
"The plan?"
"Just lighting cigars and relaxing in our usual spot."
"Sounds good."
I got another text from someone but it wasn't Bridget.
"Do you want to have another tutor session after school?"
I looked over at him and he was staring down at his phone.
"I have to babysit my ten year old sister Sarah."
I don't know why I didn't just say all three sisters and not just specifically Sarah, I hope he buys it.
"Okay no worries."
I looked at him again and he was staring right at me. I guess I must've looked distracted because he mouthed the words you okay. Yes. I mouthed back.
The bell rang and we all left the classroom.
"You know Reid, I feel like you're avoiding me."
Isaac was there when I opened my locker.
"Not avoiding, just keeping my distance." I closed my locker and looked at Isaac directly.
"I hope you realized that that's exactly what avoiding means but nicer." He frowned.
"Well I wouldn't have you be avoiding you if you stopped following me." I said.
Isaac bit his lip and looked passed me. "Message received." He walked away.
I ran my figures through my hair and walked to Science.
...
"Mendez?" Amanda asked.
"Yeah, he's in my math class." I said.
Lydia but in. "So why are you and Isaac Mendez hanging out?"
"We're not. He just tutored me once, that's all. I need better grades." I answered.
"Mhm." Lydia said sarcastically. "You like him."
I shoved Lydia. "I do not! I told him today to piss off."
She pushed me back. "Whatever you say." She smirked.
"I don't like him." They all smiled at me. "I don't!"
"Honest."
Later that night I had a nightmare. I was robbing an apartment and the owners came in. They were all shouting.
"Who are you?"
"I'm calling the cops."
"Get out!"
I heard sobs.
"Why are you doing this?" A little girl pleaded.
"I'm sorry." I whispered. "I have to."
I held up a gun and aimed at the little girl. She had dark wavy hair with beautiful blue eyes.
"Who are you?" The girl yelled. I stared at her with the gun in my shaking hand. "Who are you?!" She yelled again.
"I'm I'm-" I stuttered. "Camryn Reid."
"That's impossible." She said. "I'm Camryn Reid."
"No." I said. I held up the gun with both hands, I narrowed my eyes and shot at her. I lowered my head.
I looked up and I was staring down at myself except I was smaller, I was now the little girl. The bullet went passed my head and to the wall behind me. Everyone was gone, it was just me and me in a small room. She was still holding the gun. I was helpless, lost, confused, my worst fear.
I woke up gasping. I looked over at Anikka staring at the mirror looking at me.
"Bad dream?" She asked pinning her hair in front of a mirror.
I felt a bead of sweat travel down my cheek. "Yeah." I stared at her reflection.
"I'm sorry." She smiled faintly.
"It's just a dream."
"You sure?" She asked.
"Yeah."
Just a dream.
